Bollywood and other Indian cinema?

Really got into simply-want-to-be-entertained filmwatching this year, so lots of Bollywood. I like the conventions a lot but I don't think I've seen a single movie that I would put into like, my personal canon of must-sees. I just watched Dedh Ishqiya which is definitely the coolest Bollywood movie I've ever seen.

I've otherwise only ever watched Tollywood movies & I've really enjoyed some parallel cinema I've seen but don't have any favourites yet either. I recently watched an ethnographic documentary (?) about a couple of queer Indian couples' relationship dramas called Yeh Freedom Life & I loved that, but I love ethnographic films generally (on principle?)...

At our religious studies class we watched a movie called "PK", and the expectatives were low, but actually the movie is really good. It takes and explores different religions, but in a way that is really interesting and emotional. You can see how you see religions in different ways, ways that makes you feel confused on your religious indentity. And he movie is really funny, which makes it better.

It's on Netflix, and I really recommend it.

Not an expert in indian movies, but I saw Apur Sansar by Satyajit Ray and it's a good film, really sweet. Tecnically is the middle film of a trilogy

I know it's pretty popular but I haven't really watched any bollywood movies... Slumdog Millionaire is one of the best movies I ever watched. It left a mark on me at a young age

Despite the CGI, I absolutely loved Bajiaro Mastani. The clothes, music, dance breaks, and other elements really stuck with me.

Not sure if any of you are still active, but I've recently taken a class on Bollywood that introduced me to several Bollywood films that I've come to love.

- Fire (1996): Two women are in broken marriages and end up finding joy in their time with each other. They fall in love and have to juggle their responsibilities to their husbands as well as social and traditional norms.

- Bombay (1995): A muslim woman and a hindu man fall in love despite tensions between their families due to their religions. They elope and have two boys but end up experiencing the Bombay Riots of 1993.

-Slumdog Millionaire (2008): In order to win back his childhood love, a man enters a game show that he knows she watches. The film explores their childhoods and the struggles they faced while also defying stereotypes had against someone of his background.

Recently became interested in Bollywood movies and enjoyed:

* Jallikattu

* Gamanam

* Mili

These movies blew me away in terms of what foreign movies can accomplish. I put them up there with movies I consider classic.
