Goth is a political subculture. We Are Sophie

Warning: Details of violent hate crime

Approximetly two days ago was august 11th. On 2007, Sophie Lancaster, 20, and her boyfriend Robert Maltby, 21, was brutally attacked by 4 group of boys at a park in a town calledBacup, Lancashire, England. They were both in serious medical care for 13 days, Robert making it, but having complications now as his head was stomped at until he passed out. Both had dreams of going to university and moving in together. A day out with friends it was said they were walking home from drinking and decided to take the short cut to where they were staying at late at night, going through a skate park. As they were passing 4 boys from the age of 16-17 was following them from the entrance to the skate park where the murder has happened. They were being called names alongside freak, mosher, weirdo. Her boyfriend was attacked, stomped on the head, and as the attackers confirmed with no mercy, kicked like a football. Blood was everywhere, beaten until he was unconsious. His girlfriend Sophie, devistated, got to her knees crying, holding Robert on her arms, cradling him. The attackers who were walking turned around, came back and attacked Sophie next. Police said their face was unrecognizable. Both 13 days in coma.  the doctors said both had barey any chance of waking up and if they do their life would not be the same as they suffered severe brain trauma. Robert made it, Sophie didn't. On the brain scan, it showed that Sophie's brain was not reacting whatso bit.

And for what? Because they were different. Because they weren't pussies to be themselves. Beause they had a different lifestyle. Because they were at that park in the wrong time. Because having a creative style makes you a freak, but nit freak enough to get blood on your mainstream clothes. This is proof that it's not about having different styles, or not liking how someone dresses and live their life. As the only thing those monsters and people like them hide behind is the  fact that they conform, and is 'accepted' by society while alternative people get the blame. Ironi isn't it.Why isn't authority and people call this a hate crime. What if someone like Sophie and Robert were the attackers. They had dreams, ideas, passions, just like you and me. All because she had the courage many didn't and don't have.

As someone who was bullied in the hands of 6 boys i went to school with, going from verbal to threaten with physical attacks, in the name of sexism and abelism and power play, all because i didn't conform. I took th long route to avoid trash thrown at me.  This was 2021. I was bullied 2 years until i lost a school year, parents were involved and i got sent to therapy. Of course in no way does this compare to what i just said, but i wanted to say something else instead. I can assure you many alternative people or anyone who is a outcast have heard at least once in their life, someone trying to change you by hiding behind fake kindness. "I'm trying to help you so you become more pretty" while in actuaity it's pure condisending and disrespectful. They don't have to like or even understand others lifestyle, but what right to they have to make our life uncomfortable. It's just fabric.

Even if it's not as agressive, it comes from the same motif of hate, and i will stand on this until the fucking end. Alternative people face discrimination everyday, insults everyday. We don't owe anyone to constantly be worried. A verbal insult can quickly turn gruesome in matters of seconds. Your 'it's my opinion' excuse is straight up ass. It doesn't take away the fact that we have to endure harassment, judgment every day especally to something you have no connection to. People have the rights to express themselves and live freely. They have the right to be their own person and in power rather than following facist leaders like a heard and live in a fake sense of creativity and identity. What you have no right to do is runing so many lives while dressing mainstream. It's hypocritical how we are the disgusting emo freaks who wear dark clothes and assume we are all satanist when we are the ones being targeted. The only thing saving these failed abortions asses is their mainstream ass ugly, who knows how many thousand priced clothes. If it was someone like Sophie who did the attack, it would be because we are 'violent moshers' but no one talk enough about the hate we have to endure as alternative people.

Goth is not only a musical subculture, but political as well. A political place for diversity, from a world that has normalized cruel injustice and brainwashing by society, the patriarchy and capitalism. It's a safe space for a reason. Fighting against injustice just because we are not a pawn of society and the norm, or just because the fabric we are wearing didn't fit the mainstream standard. A safe space from being dehumanized, isolated. Thanks for me and sorry if there's any wrong grammers or words, this was a angry rant.

I remember when this happened, would have been in the same year as me at school/uni, it affected me quite a bit, id not long lost my best friend to suicide and wasn't in the best place myself. so fucking awful that it happens to alternative people. You never hear of a group of alternatives going and beating up some innocent guy for wearing tracksuit and his gf.

Although alternative people dress in spikes, chains, or clothing inspired by gothic horror that looks 'evil' or like devil worshipers to 'normal' people, they are generally the ones with the most empathy, the most caring, shy, considerate. It truly is painful that this shit still happens

The Sophie Lancaster Foundation does great work to this day, I always pay them a visit at festivals :)
