little rant on media censoring!

Okay, how do we feel about media censorship? I'm working on a project using it, and I think it's okay to some extent. Perhaps certain media is restricted to prevent dangerous information and content that violates rules, but I'm sure the problem extends beyond that in terms of social media freedom of expression and raising awareness about sensitive themes or circumstances.

It's good and bad

Good, cuz we don't need to see certain things fully (not context wise, I'm speaking of Image ceonsoring e.g.)

Bad because uh...important news, information and other things can be held from the people.

In general, whenever the word "Censorship" is used I have kneejerk negative reaction to it--how often have we seen good-faith censorship (not showing gore, etc) expanded to cover things that certain subsets of the populace just don't want people to see (lgbt+, etc)? I do think that extremely explicit things maybe shouldn't be on the evening news, but there needs to be absolutely clear language on what "explicit" truly means. Is it nudity? Is it two men/two women kissing? Is it someone getting blown up?

Unfortunately, a lot of media, social or otherwise, is growing more and more puritanical and conservative due to advertising possibilities and shifts in popular thought. Which is... worrying, to say the least.

I'm all for it when it comes to hate speech, harmful rhetoric, and misinformation, especially if it's on a big platform, but all of this unfortunately depends on whoever is deciding what counts as hateful, even if it's not actually true.

Censorship is bad because it opens the door for people to censor for whatever reason they see fit. You have people on the right and the left screaming we need to stop censorship until its something they disagree with then all of the sudden they love censorship. Its embarrassing that people dont see the hypocrisy

The only speech that should be banned is anything calling for acts of violence.

Ain't reading the rest of the thread. If you aren't willing to casually throw around the word "nigger" or other slurs then you aren't really and truly anti-censorship.

Censorship is inherently bad. It is an abstraction of reality. I live in reality, and I dont need fucking glowies or corpos controlling what kind of reality I see. With that being said, I dont think NSFL or NSFW content should be viewed by children, or IMO even for entertainment by adults.

Language should not be censored period. No word, phrase, or line, that any single person can ever utter should be censored. I am adult. Hate speech is a psyop.

I don't think anything should be banned unless if it's real graphic abuse of another person like murder or CP

Nothing else should be censored, it's a parent's job to hide the things they don't want their kids to see, and it's their job to raise someone to be respectful and careful online. and i don't think ANY speech should be censored either, even slurs. but for me im just tired of my comments getting shadowbanned on apps for the tiniest word that triggered their censors, def end that

As always, it is over-used, and by now, I have to c*nsor eve*y sec*nd word, unless I want to get banned from a site. Or it just doesn’t show my post. Or I get a threat in my inbox that I’m posting something “inappropriate “ sure honey, let’s get back to the socialist era, where people were shot after being imprisoned, for writing a poem about freedom.
