So, as a Skins UK enthusiast (I have possibly watched this series at least 15 times over, I wish I was lying but I have such a deep connection to it idk why) I want to start ranking the characters from each generation, obviously starting with Generation 1. I need a reason to yap about this show.
Tony 5/10 - Ugh. I stand my ground when I say this, Tony is possibly one of the worst--Now, I know, there would be no Skins without Tony, he has his moments, that I will not deny. He treats his friends like garbage and treated Michelle even worse. He is a gaslighter, a manipulator, and an egotistical mess. Which, I guess gives him character and depth to a point. He obviously cares deeply about Effy, which gives him a point. But, he is self obsessed and vindictive. Especially after he tried to get with Maxxie during the Russia Trip episode. I cannot stand Tony Stonem.
Michelle 6/10 - I think Michelle's biggest flaw, at least in my eyes, is how she lacked the ability to take accountability. She was rude, a tad self-centered and had her bitchy moments. But, she loved Tony so deeply, and that blinded her, but I mostly blame Tony for that, he was manipulating her and running around behind her back. She turned on Maxxie after the Tony situation. In her eyes, Tony could do little to no wrong, and that blinded her for a while. Until she finally came to her senses and left Tony. Michelle is a little more complex than on the surface. She is fragile and has a muddied idea of relationships due to her mother's relationships and that gets overlooked. She is self-conscious and desires love and Tony managed to say all the right things to her to keep her wrapped around his finger.
Cassie 8/10 - Cassie is a fan favorite and I cannot escape that in my own eyes. She is complex and has a lot of depth. Especially portraying an ED and being mentally unwell. She took a massive turn after Sid started dating Michelle when she was away. And I've seen people call her manipulative and a gaslighter before due to how she was after this--but I think people are overlooking the fact that she loved Sid and Sid said some horrible things to her when he left her. And for her to come home and find him dating Michelle after always feeling like she was in a competition with her mentally broke her--she was recovering from her ED and she was fragile--she watched Chris die and she had no healthy coping mechanisms. Her mother and father seemed mentally checked out from her life.
Anwar 6/10 - Anwar was a bit of a rollercoaster. He was basically just the "i need to have sex" character they tossed in there, but there was more depth to him. He had a close friendship with Maxxie that he quickly tossed aside due to his religious views, but he mended it after seeing how much his parents loved Maxxie and supported him. The Sketch relationship era was a bit weird, considering she was just morphing him into Maxxie because of her obsession, but again, he was the teenage boy who was obsessed with sex so he didn't think realize what was going on.
Maxxie 9/10 - I loved Maxxie, he was a great friend, the show failed to give him much time--he had his moments, but all I can say is I loved his character and he had little to no flaws. He was supportive and attentive to his friends, he cared for Tony after his accident and he had nothing but love for his friends.
Sid 7/10 - Sid had many moments. He was a questionable friend, but again, he was manipulated by Tony--which many people overlook. He was funny and had ups and downs. I think the big thing was his dad's death and how quickly he ran to Michelle when he needed comfort and tossed Cassie aside. He was in a dark place, he was dealing with Tony's accident and losing his friend, he was dealing with his girlfriend being away and he was feeling a lot of things he had never felt before.
Jal 9/10 - Jal was wonderful. She dealt with a lot of crazy and she tried her best to be a good friend to Michelle, but it was hard, Michelle was a mess. Jal was a wonderful friend to Cassie and cared so deeply about her and worried about her. Her family life was rocky, her mother was gone, her father was with a young woman who he openly had around his children and Jal had every right to be off-put by that and get angry with that woman sitting in her mother's chair at the dinner table. She went through so much--trying to get into university, finding out she was pregnant, Chris dying. all in such a short amount of time--not being allowed to be at Chris's funeral, having to watch from a distance. My heart shattered for her.
Chris 10/10 - Okay, maybe a little biased to give someone a 10/10 but Chris was my favorite character. Chris was a friend to everyone on the group. He was the funniest and I can't think of one person who disliked him. His death will always make me cry--he was turning his life around, he loved Jal so deeply. He went through so much, his father being gone, his brother dying at a young age, his mother abandoning him because she feared he would die next. She had an inkling he was sick and didn't even care to help him--she just left a stack of cash and left him alone to fend for himself. He deserved so much better.
Effy 7/10 - Effy in the first two seasons intrigued me--she went mute, she watched Tony's accident first hand, behind the partying and cool girl facade. She was a sad and lonely girl who had to deal with a sudden and traumatic change in her older brother who she looked up too so dearly. I liked her better this generation versus the second generation.
Pandora 9/10 - I know it's probably odd to place her on a list for Gen 1, but she was present during this generation and she was a refreshing change in pace. She was a gem and her and Effy's friendship developing was something I loved to watch.
Sketch 1/10 - Eugh. She was such a random addition to the show. Her episode was an interesting watch, but she is just offputting and I cannot stand her as an addition to the group, she invaded amd used Anwar to stay close to Maxxie. She was just a write in to add more complexity to Maxxie's character, which I suppose is fair in order to give him more screen time, but honestly they could have went many different directions with his character instead of giving him a stalker.
Kenneth 10/10 - Although Kenneth didn't have much screen time at all, he is still memorable. I mean, it's Daniel Kaluuya, an amazing actor, truly. Kenneth was the comedic relief and easily one of the funniest characters in Generation 1 even with the lack of screen time.
