College apps. + choosing a major

I just finished turning in all my college applications, and have already heard back from two schools I'd be ok with going to. I want to major in marine bio but have absolutely no clue what jobs (other than teaching) that I can get with that kind of degree. It's been stressing me out lmfao

Should I shoot for higher than community college if I don't know what I really want to do? I got into the state schools I like, and am waiting responses from the UCs (California). If I get into a UC, would it even be worth it to go? I'm thinking time and money-wise. Why waste that kind of money (except for the experience I guess) on a school that's supposed to be for ppl who know what they're doing?

Idk, any thoughts, experience, or opinions would be great to hear!

Hey there! I'm a first year at a UCSC and I know a lot of people who go to community so I wanted to give my own advice on the matter.

If you're really unsure about what you want to do in college, community might be your best bet. It's so SO much cheaper than a UC, and if you live in california the first 2 years of community are completely free. Im going to be honest and say i pay roughly 45k a year for my education as an in-state student (out of state is WAY higher) but that's because I'm not eligible for financial aid, but I do know a LOT of people who do get financial aid and scholarships including full rides. I say this because if you ever decide on changing your major, it may require another year to redo certain classes and you'd be saving a lot with community.

When it comes to switching majors, at least at my school it's not hard to do so before you commit to the major (but that's late into college), and i've had many community friends switch their majors, so i'm guessing it's not hard there aswell.

My advice is to wait and see what the colleges will give you for attending their school. If you get a full ride or a really good scholarship, I'd recommend committing if you still jive with the place after looking into all of the issues with the school. If those aren't the case, community is always a great bet and I highly recommend it if you don't want to go into debt and/or unsure about college. BTW, it's actually insanely easier to get into a UC through transferring from a community college, and some UCs offer guaranteed admission through TAG if you're a california resident, so you might want to look into that :D

Also im only one person with bias, so take my advice with a grain of salt. People may disagree with me and I feel you should take their opinion with equal weight.

Good luck friend and congratulations on submitting the apps. Don't worry if you still don't know what you want to do in life, we're still just kids in the grand scheme of things and there's always time to change you mind no matter what path you go down. Take care and good luck!
