hi there!
astral projection is something i've attempted on and off for a number of years, with limited success. i don't personally have much of a knack for it but several of my friends report that they have been able to intentionally leave their body and travel the astral realms.
there are a wealth of how-to guides that are widely available detailing a number of differing techniques, you should find, read, and attempt these until you find a method that works for you.
meditation will be a foundational skill to any such endeavors, and so you should learn to meditate. it's not difficult at all. you don't need to memorize any mantras, breathing patterns, or pretzelesque postures - simply relax somewhere comfortable, allow your breath to rise and fall, and simply observe your breathing as it occurs on its own.
learning to lucid dream is also said to be conducive to astral projection, this will involve reminding yourself as you fall asleep that you intend to have a lucid dream as well as forming a habit of writing down everything you remember upon waking.
if you'd like a book recommendation, Robert Bruce's "Astral Dynamics" as well as "Mastering Astral Projection" contain advice and techniques that seemed to work better than most for me, while a Edain McCoy's "Astral Projection for Beginners" worked wonders for a close friend of mine.
my last bit of advice is to ignore fearmongering; simply by virtue of being incarnate you are much more powerful than most things that reside in the astral, and your connection to your body is unbreakable. you won't get "lost" and nothing is going to just roll up and take your body while you're gone.
i wish you luck and success in your endeavors, definitely check back and let us know how it's going!
