When I was four years old, I had a rather simple dream where my parents and I were outside my old house on the driveway late at night, just outside the forest we lived near my mother and father arguing about something while I spectated from a distance. I don't recall anything of the argument except my mother hissing to my father, "just look at those two ooks watching!"
Upon saying this, she pointed to two large, identical creatures be standing at the front of the forest, staring at us in total silence - I do not remember anything of the dream past this point, and it's quite likely I woke up. To describe this pair, apparently named only the "Ooks" is no easy task, as I can still remember the mental image clearly, yet it's unlike anything else I've ever seen. All the same, I will attempt to relate the appearance of these creatures as best I can:
To begin, one must envision a smooth, black head, about the height of a medium-sized tree and at least thrice the width of a large one, if I were to estimate, placed upon a rather short but thick neck. In what I assume was a substitute for ears, these creatures had two thick, antennae-like growths on the tops of their heads, with equally black, small, circular bulbs at the top. All of this face is covered in white spots save for the mouth and these flesh-like "antennae". Without any irises, their gigantic eyes were a bright yellow, appearing almost oval in their shape. The Ooks had no noses.
The description of the mouth has been saved for last because I feel it's the most difficult aspect. Perfectly circular, lipless and always open yet apparently toothless and pitch black inside, like an empty hole. This mouth protruded outwards from below the eyes, seeming to curve slightly downwards - the "chin" of this head would also protrude and curve slightly upwards to form the bottom half of this bizarre mouth.
I had several other dreams with the Ooks, during which they would typically sit (if one can describe it as such) and stare at me, with no apparent intent. I found this unreadability very disturbing in itself, and indeed I don't think I had any dreams that revealed their intent, and their appearances were dreadful in general, but there was something particularly horrible about their wretched mouths that I simply cannot describe. Perhaps it was the pitch black within it, or the way it was constantly held open as though to threaten me, or the way its protrusions subtly cultivated it into something I can only describe as being between a trunk and a snout.
Whatever it is, I find these "Ooks" and their inexplicability to be deeply fascinating - I haven't the slightest clue how I conceived such a disturbing image, and I only wish the impact of its horror hadn't been lost through a description that, in spite of best efforts, cannot do justice to just how subtly vile it looked.
