"America is a Third World Country"

I fucking hate when people say this. As someone who lives in a Developing country, hearing people say that their safe suburban lives are akin to a third world country is insulting. Just because there's crime, does not mean it's a third world country or anything even near it. It's frankly offensive that one would even insinuate that the richest country in Earth is third world because "uhh Biden or something."

This is not to say that America is perfect. It's not. There are many improvements to be made. But the quality of life of poor people in America is far better than that of a poor person outside of the US. Do not act like problems needing to be solved makes America third world in ANY way.

Note- This is a suburbanite talking about suburbia and stuff. Take that as you will.

If a person were to say that the modern day [1950's style] suburb is like a third world country I would question there grip on reality. Like the suburbs were made to not only separate classes but used as a way to separate races from each other. With majority of suburbanites being white and minorities seemingly made to live in the increasingly unsafe cities because of a whole slue of other issues connected to inequality, increasing suburbanization, and the new "American dream." This also connects to Canada too since both countries used the same tactics to get rid of poor people and minorities when the rapid suburbanization happed for both.

Also, if a crime/crimes were to happen everyday but the living quality were to stay the same or improve I wouldn't consider it a third world country. This isn't even including on how with the more people you have in one place the likely hood of X happening would only go up. Like organized crime.

I totally agree. I hear the phrase "America is a third world country in a Gucci belt" relatively often online and it is so incredibly out-of-touch with reality that it shocks me. I think it's just another instance of actual critiques on American society being replaced with meaningless phrases that people parrot on the internet without actually having a nuanced opinion.

Obviously, modern America has increasingly more issues related to poverty and crime but saying "it's like a third world country" is just reductive. It fails to investigate the material causes behind such changes in society, fails to take a particular stance against how that should be combatted, and fails to acknowledge the exploitation and suffering working class people in developing countries experience.

I think by saying that America is a "third world country" though, Americans and people from other developed countries (because I also see a lot of them saying this) ignore the plights of developing countries and how many of their issues are rooted in imperialism and continued exploitation at the hands of American and Western European empires.
