Forum: Games

I wanna go through and play a bunch of GBA games that i missed out on, I'd love any suggestions you have! Tell me about your favorites, I'd love to hear about the more obscure ones if you've got them but really anything goes!

My list so far
  • Dogz: You look after a dog for 2 in game weeks, its not  super cool gameplay but its a chill little time waster.
  • Drill Dozer: A fun little platformer where you control a drill mech, cute graphics too. A non-Pokemon Gamefreak Title.
  • Klonoa - Empire of Dreams: Not yet played. I liked the PS1 game so i figured why not get it lol.
  • TLoZ - The Minish Cap: The only Zelda game iv ever actually 100%. Its a Zelda game, very cool, nuff said.
  • Mario & Luigi - Superstar Saga: I always thought this looked cool but never got around to it, still need to play lol
  • Metroid Fusion: I like this Metroid title, i think thats an unpopular opinion (?) idc tho its cool and fun and I like the story.
  • Sonic Battle: Whenever I bring this up no one has heard of it lol, I like the character customization and graphics mostly.

  • Madagascar: I'll make a blog or somthing when i play this ^^ Thanks for the suggest robin!
  • Harry Potter Quiddich World Cup: Not yet played but thanks for the suggestion electroslag!
  • Castlevania:Aria of Sorrow: Not yet played but thankyou Zauberer for the suggestion!
  • Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team: Not yet played
  • HamTaro Ham-Ham Heartbreak: Not yet played
  • Final Fantasy Tactics: Not yet played
  • Sword of Mana: Not yet played. Thanks to KittenRabies for the preceding suggestions! and good luck at the elite four XD
  • Megeman Battle Network [series]: thanks eva for the suggestion! ill keep Partners in Time if i ever do DS games too!
  • DBZ Buu’s Fury: Not yet Played, im not rlly a DBZ fan but could this change?? I’ll see! Thanks Chen for the suggestion!
  • Wario Land 4: Not yet played. Thanks Peter Gambino for the suggestion, if its good ill check out the others!
  • Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones: Not yet played! Ty Kimera Royal for the suggest! I'v never actually played a fire emblem game !

I have a soft spot for this little licensed game for the dreamworks madagascar movie simply titled "madagascar", I think it has a DS version as well? but it was my very first game, its a platformer that handles pretty well and has you switching between characters frequently to do different things i.e. the lion can double jump, the hippo can swim.. i suggest checking it out!

Actually Metroid Fusion is considered one of the best 2D Metroid games along with Super Metroid, do not worry pal :D

GBA offers one of the best Castlevania games that I ever played, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. Great atmosphere, good story and tight gameplay. It's a metroidvania and it reminds me of Castlevania SOTN, that's a game to try sooner or later.

Also, I heard some extremely positive opinions about Mother 3 by a lot of people, but I have yet to play it!

Dogz, YES! I also played the crap out of Catz, they're such relaxing little games. The games I've played so far aren't super obscure, currently trying to beat the Elite Four in Pokemon Leafgreen and I had finished Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue team sometime last year I believe. My next games to play are HamTaro Ham-Ham Heartbreak and either Final Fantasy Tactics or Sword of Mana.

Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga is a great pick! If you end up enjoying that, I thought Partners in Time on the DS was also great.
I wasn't deep into GBA but I enjoyed the Megaman Battle Network series. All of them are kinda the same, I'd get the 2nd or 3rd one since I played those. Very interesting real-time tactical battle system.

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones is a favourite of mine! it's a bit more down to earth than the other games in the series but it's still really fun. people complain because it's a little bit on the easier side but honestly it's still really challenging and the story made it worth it for me.

I don't have a big collection but here are a few of my favourite hidden gems / underrated games so far:

Maniac Racers Advance (aka Motorcross Maniacs Advance) is a fun but overlooked title. Gameplay wise, it's a bit like Excite Bike meets Sonic the Hedgehog. Very fast and takes a little while to get to grips with.

There's Alien Hominid, which is an expanded version of the old Newgrounds Flash game. That's worth a look if you like Metal Slug style run and gun games. A bit short, but has smooth looking animation with loads of charm.

Columns Crown is a decent puzzler but not well regarded. It's just Columns tbh, so if you don't like Columns you won't enjoy it, but I like it.

V-rally 3 is a game that's lost much of its magic these days, but I still think it's very impressive to see a fully 3D rally car game running on the humble GBA. It even has a first person mode for added immersiveness!

And finally, there's Advance Guardian Heroes: A technically impressive and ambitious beat 'em up that doesn't quite hit the mark. But still, it's cool to see what the GBA can do when it's made to sweat. Treasure also made Astro Boy: Omega Factor and Gunstar Super Heroes (both are excellent).

Solid ports like Jet Set Radio, Super Monkey Ball Jr, Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival are worthy of a mention too, but not exactly obscure.

Mother 3 is on the GBA, but it was only released in Japan. You can download a rom with a fan translation.

The Jet Set Radio GBA port is actually not bad, and it's done well.

I don't know if you put this on the list, but Wario Ware Inc. and Wario Ware Twisted are very good wario ware games.

The port of A Link To The Past w/ Four Swords is good. Four Swords on the ALTTP port is very fun with friends if you every get the chance (it is unlikely that you will due to the circumstances of the game). In order to play Four Swords you need, at minimum, 2 game boy advances, 2 link cables, 2 of the games. I was able to play it with a friend and 1 other person back in the day.

Rebelstar: Tactical Command was a super weird one that I had on my GBA. It was a spiritual successor to the Rebelstar computer games from the early 80's and were essentially XCOM style games. The GBA game also plays super similar to an XCOM game, with turn-based isometric gameplay, half and full cover systems, items and weapons, upgrades and that sorta stuff. I remember enjoying it a lot as a kid, and it's probably still good if you're into those sorts of titles.

I would say Mother 3, Boktai, Magical Vacation and Oriental Blue. Pretty sure these last two have complete english translation patches!

It's like a proto-VVVVVV, and it's really cool.

devil children, a spinoff of a spinoff of good ol' megami tensei. not only is it obscure, it is also... very interesting. ahem. basically the result of trying to market occult, violent, adult-themed megami tensei to the pokemon demographic.

Game & watch gallery advance is one of my favorites to play every so often with the ammount of recreations and re-imaginings it has of those original things. Definitely not one to beat/complete in one sitting

( ´ ▽ ` )

Also worth mentioning: Super mario bros advance. One of my favorite gba games (maybe because i grew up with it ( ᐛ ))

They made some decent Spyro games for the GBA that managed to feel like the original PS1 games despite the hardware downgrade. Season of Ice I've never managed to finish, but I've played Season of Flame about a billion times. Never played Attack of the Rhynocs, though (and stay away from Spyro Orange/Crash Purple -- that was just plain wasted potential).

i can vouch for game and watch gallery, wario land 4, mario and luigi superstar saga, alien hominid, and mother 3 all being really great games. its kinda hard to think off the top of my head rare or obscure games that are really good, but I think there's a lot more than you think there would be at first. there was a japanese one where you move a spinning rectangle through an obstacle course that was pretty good, the name is escaping me...

I really loved the game Tactics Ogre. It's similar to Final Fantasy Tactics but its from the Ogre Battle Franchise... which if you don't know what that is, that's fine, it's just a really solid RPG Tactics game!

I have one which may or may not be obscure, but it's definetly a good one: Ninja Five-O

Ninja Five-O may be one of the few games that makes you feel like a ninja! The grapple mechanic is SUPER satisfying to use, music is banging despide the GBA's notorious sound capabilities, and it's fast paced, just like it should be.

My only theory as to why this game has gone unnoticed on its heyday is because of the blurry GBA screen. Yeah I played on an emulator and there it ROCKS! Just a word of advice: Playing on easy locks you out of half of the game so...yeah just go on normal.

Urban Yeti, the game is very bad in every way and is clunky as all hell, but the devs put a lot of effort and passion into the insane strangeness of it all.

It's a trip to play and well worth it.

Shin Megami Tensei and SMT2

Kinda runs like a DOOM-esq dungeon crawl but it’s the roots for persona if you’ve ever been interested in those

They also have a pokemon-like version called DemiKids

Also a good Pokémon rom hack is Unbound, it brings in all the mons from every installment into a fire red patch and I’ve only gotten to the third gym but it’s filled with fun. There’s missions to kill your time with while also giving you fun ways to get new mons. Plus there’s a difficulty choice AND if you choose it, your “grittier” pokemon experience starts with some guy getting burnt to ashes with a houndoom :^)

if you ever have time try it

If you're into side-scrolling action games, check out 'Ninja
Five-O' for the GBA. I don't know how easy it is to get carts of it
these days but I guess most people emulate? Or actually, I have an Everdrive
for my GBA. It's not the cheapest flashcart but it doesn't use a ton of
battery and is mega compatible and nice, that's what I've been using to
play Ninja Five-O.
Other than that, checkout /v/'s
recommended GBA games here:
https://vsrecommendedgames.fandom.com/wiki/Game_Boy_Advance  - mostly
/v/ has terrible opinions on videogames, but I find this wiki to be
useful in separating the shit from the good for platforms with a ton of
titles

the two Summon Night games (Swordcraft Story and Swordcraft Story 2) that actually got localized in english-speaking regions are worth playing. weird mix of crafting stuff, JRPG overworld navigation, and 2d almost fighting game-ish?? combat. also there are some light dating sim elements thrown in there, just because. very odd pair of games but pretty good from what i recall (it has admittedly been quite a long time since i actually played them)

far over on the "weird" end is the Love Hina GBA game, which i think is mostly notable for being the rare dating sim visual novel thing to get an official english release in that time period.

I believe this qualifies as obscure: Yu Yu Hakusho Tournament Tactics. It's a solid Strategy RPG that covers the entirety of the tournament arc for Yu Yu Hakusho. Its separated into Disgaea-esque stages and when you defeat an enemy character you can add them to your roster. You get a LOT of characters. If we are speaking of the truly obscure Back to Stone is a very uncommon title. Its graphics are interesting, at least to me. However, the lack of a save feature and difficult puzzles and wonky physics can be very frustrating, even infuriating. It'd say check it out if only for the novelty.

I'll list a couple I've played and liked over the years that people might not remember.

  • Mother 3 - w/ English fan translation patch for it
  • The Sims 2 - An interesting port
  • Doom - Bad port but cool history
  • Metroid Fusion
  • DBZ Buu's Fury - Great DBZ RPG
  • Keitai Denjū Telefang 2 - You might have seen it as pokemon Jade online
  • Kirby and the Amazing Mirror (my personal favorite)
Homebrew Games
  • Celeste Classic GBA
  • Pokemon Flora Sky
  • TouhouMon Purple
  • Powder
  • Anguna
  • Graveblood
If you find a ROM or a physical copy of the GameBoy Advance Video titles I'd highly recommend giving those a view, they were very unique to the time. It's weird how varied the releases were but cool (at the time) to be able to watch stuff on the go. I owned some pokemon and Cartoon Network episodes, not sure if I still have them.
