Hello hello!

I can't speak to trainsurfing but I have my fair share of hitchhiking experiences, mostly during long backpacking trips where I don't have a car.

I'd say for men in most states, in the U.S. at least, it's pretty safe. Especially if you're near a hiking trail. People expect backpackers to be looking for rides. If you're just hitching for an easy transportation than my biggest advice is...dress like you're doing something fun. If you're hitching to get to a skiing mountain, dress for the event so people know you're not creepy. If you're hitching just to get from state to state with no apparent reason, then just throw a pair of skis or a backpacking pack on your back. It makes all the difference.

If you're a woman, this advice is coming more from my female friends who hitch: don't get into a single man's car. If he doesn't have a wife, kids, or husband in the car, just don't. It's better to play it safe. Worst case scenario you can get an uber. Stick to women, and bonus points if those women have children.
