‘If you build it, he will come’

‘If you build it,

they will come’

‘ あなたがそれを構築すれば、

彼らは来るでしょう。’

Field of Dreams 1989 is a film about a man with a magical backyard, to put it simply. This magical backyard leads him to mending his relationship with his deceased father, who he had a less-than-ideal relationship with in life. The selling point of this film is american baseball, which he and his father are passionate about… The movie also takes place in the state of Iowa, which may be relevant to better fan detectives.

Fall Out Boy left us a hint on Tumblr… A photo of an old magazine in a frame with no particularly interesting caption. What makes it notable is that fans could spot the ‘F’, ‘B’ and ‘8’ in the reflection. Speculation around this seems to be dying already, but there is some believed significance in the ‘8’ because the number closely resembles the symbol for ‘infinity’.

Fall Out Boy have been using the misquote ‘If you build, they will come’ to tease their 8th album. In the movie, this is the first line the protagonist heard that led him toward mending his relationship with his father. Fall Out Boy have sent out a postcard to seemingly random fans with a baseball in place of the ‘I’ dot… A digital and interactive version of the postcard is officially available at https://sendingmylovefrompinkseashellbeach.com/. The Japanese text reads the same misquote they’ve been using when translated.

As most are aware, we got the first clue to Fall Out Boy’s 8th album (referred to as FOB8 from here on) in a Chicago newspaper. Fans quickly investigated in the ad further than the quote and found an image beneath the text. What the image is is up to interpretation, of course, but most seem to agree it is a catchers’ mit catching a baseball.

FOBRussia on Twitter speculated — after the newspaper reveal— that the album, or at least something surrounding it, would be themed entirely around the yin-yang, a Chinese symbol that represents opposite yet interconnected forces, as the smiley Fall Out Boy have been using resembles it. FOBRussia also suggested that this album may be a follow-up of Folie à Deux… While I personally believe their other theories are far fetched, considering now, these two may be credible.

Thoughts? What else will we get..?

ADDRESSING A SMALL RUMOUR; DEC 20 2022 MINOR (?) UPDATE:

https://theboysareback.co/?

There is small but real speculation of California-based boyband coming back around. An unknown band has started being cryptic online through social media accounts with the handle @theboys_areback. Evidence they are California or LA-based is in the hints they've been leaving, photos of places in the state... But there is also a countdown which currently leaves us with 12 days, and a suggestion that these hints started popping up 5 days ago. The colour scheme and the static background of the website seems consistent with the FOB8 logo, but there is no further evidence.

Most music fans are believing this to be the rivival of a 90s boyband, which is likely the case, but here's some things FOB fans have pointed out that I will share personal opinion on afterword.

1. FOB have relocated to California.

2. Colour scheme lines up

3. It's cryptic

4. sendingmylovefrompinkseashellbeach.com is a red herring (decoy), and it says so in the code itself.

Now onto personal opinion:

1. There's nothing in this website that screams 'FOB'. Unless 'we're back and better than ever' is a lyric... But even then... That is not even something an AI would think of for FOB lyrics.

THE POTENTIAL (BAD) LYRICS

2. There is no hints in the code. Would a hag band's marketing team (no offense, I love my 90s girlgroups) think the audience knows to look into the source code anyway?

'THE BOYS ARE BACK... WHO DO YOU THINK WE ARE?' NOT MY FOB?

3. I don't believe FOB would ever give on Chicago. I think Chicago is in their hearts too much. It could possibly have something to do with one of the films Pete has posted since we got our first tease, but IIRC... One film is set in Illinois, one China, the big one being Iowa ('Is this Heaven? No, it's Iowa!').

WHO THE HELL IS LONG BEACH CALIFORNIA?

4. It's not interesting. By this I mean: themaniacorp.com, in it's day, was... different than this website. Again, sendingmylovefrompinkseashellbeach, has the FOB8 logo in the source code. I feel like FOB marketing team wouldn't mess this up.

POINTING OUT THE SMALLER THINGS

LLAMALOVE YOU TO DEATH

That's all for now.

UPDATE DEC 21 2022:

Click the Sea Shell! What does it mean?

Pete spoke of a movie when in talks for his unreleased solo album, the movie was Reality Bites (1994). I laid off watching it because the site is red herring, but I’m gonna give in tonight! Pete spoke of the part where the father of the protagonist speaks to the protagonist after a cancer diagnosis, giving him a pink seashell to help explain things. The shell is empty, the protagonist thinks it’s meaningless, but it’s more about enjoying the little things in life.* HORRIBLE description, I will edit it when I watch it! But Pete said that to him, there is a record in the pink seashell.

Well… there’s a baseball in this one!!!!! What does it meannnnn.

The catchers-mit seashell fades to show us this screen. ‘The beach was never real. None of it is.’
