‘If you build it, he will come’
‘If you build it,
they will come’
‘ あなたがそれを構築すれば、
彼らは来るでしょう。’Field of Dreams 1989 is a film about a man with a magical backyard, to put it simply. This magical backyard leads him to mending his relationship with his deceased father, who he had a less-than-ideal relationship with in life. The selling point of this film is american baseball, which he and his father are passionate about… The movie also takes place in the state of Iowa, which may be relevant to better fan detectives.
Fall Out Boy left us a hint on Tumblr… A photo of an old magazine in a frame with no particularly interesting caption. What makes it notable is that fans could spot the ‘F’, ‘B’ and ‘8’ in the reflection. Speculation around this seems to be dying already, but there is some believed significance in the ‘8’ because the number closely resembles the symbol for ‘infinity’.
Fall Out Boy have been using the misquote ‘If you build, they will come’ to tease their 8th album. In the movie, this is the first line the protagonist heard that led him toward mending his relationship with his father. Fall Out Boy have sent out a postcard to seemingly random fans with a baseball in place of the ‘I’ dot… A digital and interactive version of the postcard is officially available at https://sendingmylovefrompinkseashellbeach.com/. The Japanese text reads the same misquote they’ve been using when translated.
As most are aware, we got the first clue to Fall Out Boy’s 8th album (referred to as FOB8 from here on) in a Chicago newspaper. Fans quickly investigated in the ad further than the quote and found an image beneath the text. What the image is is up to interpretation, of course, but most seem to agree it is a catchers’ mit catching a baseball.
FOBRussia on Twitter speculated — after the newspaper reveal— that the album, or at least something surrounding it, would be themed entirely around the yin-yang, a Chinese symbol that represents opposite yet interconnected forces, as the smiley Fall Out Boy have been using resembles it. FOBRussia also suggested that this album may be a follow-up of Folie à Deux… While I personally believe their other theories are far fetched, considering now, these two may be credible.
Thoughts? What else will we get..?
