I'm from the UK, but tbf I feel like this goes for mainstream music in general. Mainstream music is so dead, especially in the UK everything is mainstream pop from the US or 'indie pop' and its always the same artists, i'm not saying they're bad or they don't deserve to be no1 however the music culture has completely changed to mirror our consumerist tendencies where we listen to this poppy 'candy' music which in the end is just the same reused junk and have completely gotten away from individualism. One could argue that this new 'indie' is a response to this however even bedroom pop and indie pop is a rehash of music produced in the 90s by artists like Duster (I recommend) or is heavily inspire by Mac Demarco, who in my opinion was one of the artists who were popularised it(for good reason he's sick) and now massively influences indie pop now. I'm not saying this is a bad thing as this trend of being the indie kid and listening to indie rock/pop has genuinely brought a lot of people away from generic pop played on the radio, which is basically a rehash of the song played before which sounds similar, towards individual artists who are developing their own sound and producing brand new music whether that be influenced by the afformentioned sound of the 90s or artists like Mac Demarco as its still new in its own individual way. I think one of the reasons for the popularisation of this generic pop sound is the decline in record and CD sales and the expansion of online music streaming services. This would lead to record labels seeing a decline in sales and so to supplement this they would take bands/artists which were very similar to the popular sound at the time (being the early 2010s) and subsidise them as they were more reliable to generate sales instead of taking the gamble on new alternative artists who were experimental and developing genres. In my opinion this led to a steady decline in experimentation and the implementation of the current formularised pop 'candy' which is easy and quick to consume however is essentially junk. Now i'm not saying everyone should listen to indie music or alternative music because quite frankly music is here for everyone to enjoy and so whatever you feel comfortable and happy listening to, I support that and I support it if it makes you happy that's literally the main thing and the whole point of listening to music, however I find it sad where we've come from decades of new experimental and alternative music who introduced new sounds, for example The Beatles, Queen, The Smiths, Oasis, Nirvana, Depeche Mode, Kasabian etc etc there's so many more bands and artists to mention, but my point is nowadays you see a lack of genuinely good artists who everyone can enjoy and listen to which is just something completely different and new.

Anyone is free to comment and input their own opinion obviously but please let me know if you think im wrong and explain why :) either way I hope y'all have a good day
