Are we more metal purists (thinkin like Power Metal, Progressive Metal, Death Metal, etc) or we including the Punk/Metal subgeneres too (Post-Hardcore, Metalcore, Deathcore, etc.)? Wanna know before I start asking questions around here.

I used to really like the heavier stuff (Metallica, Manowar, etc) but more recently I've been listening to stuff like Rainbow and DIO's run of Black Sabbath. I call it "dad metal" lol

I'm almost definitely a total thrash girl in every way, but I also listen to almost every type of metal from Black Sabbath to Cannibal Corpse to Fit for an Autopsy. No need to gatekeep as long as its fuckin heavy!!

When I was 15, I probably would've asked a similar question, but then I took an arrow to the knee grew up and stopped caring.

Im old school metal.... Prob defined as thrash metal these days (Metallica, Sepultura, Testament, Pantera) Butthen i have really been enjoying some of the nu metal (5FDP, Terror Universal, Slipknot) and some prog metal (Oceans of Slumber and Rage of Light) lately.
Tbh i hate this genre breakdown! I like metal...that means no pop/jazz/blues and country will get you dropped off at Waffle House!!!

On the one had I listen to a lot of French doom. Shit like Ataraxie and Saturnus.
But the stuff I'm playing in my car is prog metal like IQ, Nu Metal like Nonpoint, powermetal like Blind Guardian, or something stonery like Lavatory Service (or god forbid Soen or Tool but I wanted to give some more niche examples because I've met people in the community who care about that.) I don't go right for the heaviest, hardest tunes unless I'm in a mood. I like to sing along and god knows I can't do a growl to save my soul.
I think "turning your nose up" at a style because it's too heavy or soft is exhausting. You either like something or you don't. One way isn't "better" and there's definitely a lot of talent that goes into both sides of the spectrum. There's also lazy people on both sides. Heavier metal doesn't automatically equal quality. I also don't think "nicheness" should be a badge of honor. There are some bangers in the more mainstream that get snubbed by the more aggro metalheads.
Idk... I think what I'm saying is... post whatever you like. I wont judge unless you're the person going around saying things like "nu metal is fake metal."

Back when I was very young I believed you couldn't be 'metal' unless you listened to the heavy stuff. After all, that's what the metal teens of the time told me.
Through time as I got exposed to more bands my mentality around the concept of 'being a true metalhead started to change. Now my playlist goes from aggressive loud sounds to music that makes me feel as if I am a character in Fable.
Maturing is realizing that being a purist is lame and real metalheads listen to a vast variety of subgenres as well as genres outside of the 'rock' family. I get what you mean though, some people can be extremely hostile and anal about metal.
There's a lot of talent, we shouldn't limit our experiences just to fit a stereotype. It's basically a disservice to oneself.

As an elder in his early 60's here's my take on metal. Rule #1 there is no limit on genres when it comes to metal and it's only a matter of opinion on which type is considered metal. I personally can go from A to Z in a blink of an eye as to which genre of metal I like to listen to.

The genres I love are prog, death, black, sludge/stoner, and heavy. I also enjoy thrash, crossover thrash, doom, funeral doom, grind, power, symphonic, folk, and groove metal.
Deathcore and metalcore are not my thing but I have no issue with them and I wouldn't discourage people from listening to them.

I like anything catchy with a groove. So Thrash, Death, Grind, Nu and Metalcore are my favourites. I like Deathcore and Slam if the riffs stick in my head well enough and Power and Black if there's enough body to it. Doom needs to have varying dynamics for me to like it.
In short, I judge on the songs rather than the 'cliques'.

they are "dethtech" and "keygen-church" pretty different from usual types of metal but they still

Old school thrash, black, and death metal to me is the real heavy stuff, bands like Obituary, Sepultura, Death, Bolt Thrower, Bathory, Venom, Mayhem, Slayer, Morbid Angel, Entombed, and Incantation are some of the heaviest and more importantly well written bands out there. Theyre mainstream but theyre mainstream for good reason

Meh, I can see that extreme gatekeepers of Metal can be a problem in the community. If someone enjoys a subgenre I don't really like, then I don't need to ruin their fun, you know? Let people enjoy Nu-Metal or Deathcore.
Hmm but personally for me, I'm into Progressive Metal, 80's Heavy Metal, and Industrial Metal lately. But I do listen to underground Death Metal, Black Metal, Doom Metal, and Grindcore often as well.

Predominantly black metal (dungeon, tanzel, keller) but I also enjoy slam, grind, ambient and doom. Black has really been a favourite for awhile with how diverse it is, people only really scratch on the surface and only make the assumption on those more popular bands, even though they are relativley good aswell.

I guess I am more of a metal purist-someone recommended I listen to Ghost but I said no because they're not very heavy. Just in Power Metal alone, I have plenty of horror-themed bands to listen to before Ghost.

Me personally, I haven't listened to metal for too long (about 3 years) and I have fallen into the Thrash metal catagory more than anything. I know, I know. it's really basic but it is really good to me!
