Making friends! Spacehey Vs Twitter, and why it feels so different

I am someone who was around on the 'old internet', although, I never took part in things like Myspace. My early internet experiences consisted of communicating with people though Deviantart and MSPARP. (A very clunky old roleplaying chat site based on the fictional Homestuck chat client called 'Pesterchum') And on rare occasions, Tumblr!

Back then, it seemed easy to talk to people! You just...... Started talking! Easy, right?
You just like... Talked!
Mind, the internet was fucking risky, dont get me wrong! But, it seemed easier to block somebody too. Everyone was basically an island...

Now days, everyone has everything posted out for all to see!
You can look at a persons Carrd and instantly know so much about the person, so much so that... Its a little intimidating to even talk to them. Pre-assumptions are made based on the overwhelming info to the point that its scary to even THINK about making friends with somebody.

Its no longer about acting like a decent person, its about how many likes and retweets. Its no longer about communication, its about presentation. Making things look good, rather then finding a community based on reaching out and talking!

The internet is a safer place now because of new leaps made, but, it is no longer for introverts, it no longer feels safe for the unconventional unless theres a strong group behind you, or what you like and stand for. (As long as its not harmful or evil! Duh!)

Its less about independence and more about being conventional, and yes, its safer, but at what cost?

Iv kinda gone off track a bit,,, ops,,,
But, before I end this, I just wanted to state an observation I had...
It seems like Tumblr is the only major platform that has this type of independent feeling to it, or at the very least, a shadow of what the old internet used to be. I often think how much easier it is to reach out to my fav artists on Tumblr vs Twitter.

Anyways!!!

What do you guys think!!! I would love to know your thoughts!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel its just as intimidating, if not more, to know jack shit about a person before talking to them. But then again, my experiences with CARRDS and stuff is to find out if a person is a bigot towards my community. I like to get that out of the way instead of just finding it out lol.

I wasn't around for the early internet (I wasn't born yet lol) but from what recollections of it that I've seen, interactions seemed much more genuine. Back then, you joined specific communities based on topics that you enjoyed and interactions were so much more lax.

These days everything is just a corporate circlejerk. Even in the past few days, I've seen so many more ads on Instagram and Twitter than ever. It's a wasteland of people constantly being shoved together in a tight, overactive space, and this eventually leads to arguments and discourse all throughout. Sure, you still ran into scummy people on the early internet, but it seems that it was much easier to avoid certain people and certain communities. These days, talking to the wrong people, even by accident, is like an online death sentence.

i've been around on the internet for awhile. I remember having a myspace account and a geocities account a long time ago. All the fourms, fansites and message borads have been replaced by reddit and facebook. reddit is a pretty cool site where you can make communities and things like that but i dont like the fact it became social media just like the other tech giant websites. also, facebook has groups that can be helpful for people but personally i dont like how facebook functions. overall i think people went to these sites because they are easy and convenient. I wish more people would get into self-hosting/cyber-homesteding and claim independence from big tech or find a chill admin to host things for you.

the last thing i dont like about social media is the snobby attitude and middle school tier popularity contest bs that it encourages.

I remember when the go to chat and forum service was BeSeen.com

Anyone could create a chat room and have control over it; so if people were jerks, you could ban them. The same with the BeSeen forums. Several companies and pop culture interests used BeSeen. I found some long lasting online friends through the Voltron: Defender of the Universe chat room and forums. It did seem so much easier to join conversations and meet people online than it does using Twitter.

Personally, I hate Twitter's format. Limiting the characters to only 120-some characters...it's no wonder fights break out on there all the time. You can't complete a full thought in 120 characters. Reddit is another site whose format I can't stand. Not too mention, some places on there can get very...tense. A lot of attitude on there.
