so, 1 of my spacehey besties, 𝓕 𝓻 𝓪 𝓷 𝓴, recently posted a spacehey bulletin asking if every country had it's own version of myspace, and i wanted 2 bring this topic 2 light here (i'll insert a screenshot down below).
founded in february of 2003, 6 months b4 myspace was founded, nexopia, as told by frank himself, was considered 2 b the myspace of certain territories in western canada. surprisingly, nexopia is still up and running 2day, however, it's changed sumwhat drastically from what it looked like back in the day.
sumthing similar could b said abt bebo. founded in january of 2005, bebo was founded by a san franciscan couple. the site l8r gained a massive following in the uk, overtaking myspace as the most widely used social networking website in the uk, and eventually registered @ least 10.7 million users by the end of 2007. unfortunately, all good things have 2 come 2 an end. in 2013, bebo filed 4 chapter 11 bankruptcy, and was shut down by the end of that yr. in january of 2021, bebo was announced that it would return as a new social media network, however, it's been in a private-beta phase since relaunching and one can only join by invite only. hopefully bebo can go back 2 its og roots and can feel like the mid-2000s bebo days again.
sum other international myspace incarnations i could think of that were mentioned in the comment sections of the bulletin were hyves (founded in september of 2004, it was considered as the dutch equivalent of myspace, but shut down @ the end of 2013), odnoklassniki (founded in march of 2006, it was considered as the russian equivalent of myspace, and it is still up and running 2day, but has changed drastically over the yrs, much like every other myspace equivalent), skyrock (founded in december of 2002, just almost 8 months b4 myspace came out, it was considered as 1 of the many precursors 2 myspace, as well as the french equivalent of myspace, it is still up 2day but like every other myspace equivalent website, has changed very drastically over the yrs), tiranalive (founded in october of 2003, the country that frank was born in, it was considered the albanian equivalent of myspace, but shut down around 2014), nettby (founded in september of 2006, it was considered the norwegian equivalent of myspace, and was also popular in spain, but shut down @ the end of 2010), netlog (formerly known as facebox, bingbox, and redbox, founded in 1999, 4 yrs b4 myspace came out, and was considered 1 of the myspace precursors, and was also a belgian website, but shut down in april of 2015), and tuenti (founded in february of 2006, it was the spanish equivalent of myspace, but was more like facebook than myspace, and it is still up and running 2day).
aside from all the international incarnations of myspace, we also had sites similar 2 myspace, such as facebook (in its early yrs), hi5, tagged, friendster (a precursor 2 myspace), faceparty, orkut, and many others.
bolt.com, sixdegrees, asianavenue, blackplanet, and migente which were all precursors 2 myspace and other social media websites that would soon follow after it, were considered 2 b the first social networking websites ever released and were argued 2 have influenced the way we use social media 2day. yes, that also includes myspace.
and ofc, we also have the myspace recreations in recent yrs, despite myspace declining in popularity. these include yuniti (founded in the summer of 2005, yuniti was 1 of the earliest myspace recreations, despite myspace being @ its peak during that time, however, it shut down @ the end of 2015), yuwie (founded in september of 2007, yuwie was like myspace and facebook combined, except users were being payed, shut down in august of 2011), friendproject (founded in february of 2008, friendproject was cre8ed as a response 2 the declining popularity of myspace, which would continue throughout 2008 and continue throughout the early 2010s, friendproject is still up and running), myspace93 (founded in august of 2019, myspace93 was like myspace @ its peak, except it came w many limited stuff u could do, shut down in june of 2021), and ofc, spacehey (founded in november of 2020, spacehey, despite still being in a beta-phase, is exactly like myspace during its peak in the mid-2000s, and has been sumwhat gaining a lot of popularity as of l8).
hopefully we can find other obscure and/or underr8ed social networking websites sooner or l8r, but wow, i never knew that myspace became such a huge cultural phenomenon that other international companies were trying 2 emul8 it in sum way.
r there any of precursors 2 myspace, international versions of myspace, or any other recreations of myspace that i should know abt? let me know.
ilusm and i will keep y'all posted as always!! bye!!
