The big 3 in the astrological community as known as the Ascendant Sign (or Rising Sign). It is incorrectly believed to be the “mask” you wear to the world, when it fact it is actually the sign you behave as. Your Sun sign is your inner motive. So while you are moved by Sagittarius things, the way you act it out will be through the Rising Sign.
For example. I’m a Capricorn Sun and even though I feel strongly inside for Capricorn things, I act like a Scorpio because it’s a my Rising Sign. All my Capricorn needs are filter through a Scorpionic action.
The Moon sign is the sign the Moon was stationed at the time of your birth. (Accurate birth time is required for Rising and Moon Signs). The moon sign is your subconscious and how you feel. It is your emotions and your home and community. It’s how you feel about women and motherhood. It is your feminine expression. So again while you may be a Sagittarius Sun and that’s your inner core, you may express your feelings in a completely different way.
Another example…My moon is in Libra. So while my inner motivations are Capricorn, my feelings and emotions take on Libra qualities and I then express these feelings through a Scorpio filter because of my Ascendant sign.
They call these the big 3 because they are important points in a natal chart. Not the ONLY important parts, but a good start.
Side note: Houses and aspects change these attributes, so even though knowing placements is important, general reads only partially work because of additional points that change the delineation.

I'm an Aries, ascendant Sagittarius.
Sun Aries and Moon Scorpio.
That's quite embarassing because I had two ex boyfriends whose sign was Scorpio and with both I had several communication problems. Maybe I should open a topic about this!

I’m a Gemini rising, Leo Sun and Sagittarius Moon. One of the only celebrities I know of with the same placements is Neil Armstrong.
