the garden of words is a pretty sad movie. although, it is relatively short (about 45 mins), but the animation is some of the best I've seen recently.

Fruits Basket. Or Naruto tbh. Out of all of the anime I've seen I've cried the most at Naruto.

If you're looking for movie recs, may I suggest Millennium Actress? It's a melancholy work by Satoshi Kon about an actress trying to find a man she used to love before he disappeared forever. Definitely his most depressing movie.

Okay, so I recommend Clannad and it's sequel Clannad After Story. That one has me and my older sister bawling my eyes out. It's not full of any cliches or boring harems at all, it's just amazing.

Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's a bit deep but the maker of the anime truly portrayed how he felt in the Anime when he was making it at the time.
