Lot of great recs already. Did anyone say Excel Saga? It's ridiculous and full of 4th-wall breaking stuff, including the animator being a character in the anime. I also love the theme song.

Fruits Basket 2001 is a great classic anime despite it being unfinished. It's a great adaptation to the manga and it really has such a nostalgic soundtrack. I recommend watching it. :)

Vampire Hunter D (released in '85) and its sequel Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (released in 2000) are my total faves from that era of anime. I personally prefer its sequel as its plot and animation is of higher quality but that's just a personal opinion of mine.

The synopsis of vhd basically goes:
The year is 12,090. Ten thousand years ago, there was a war between humans and supernatural monsters, and the monsters won. Humans are now dominated by vampires who keep werewolves and mutants to protect them. Humans must now battle a variety of monsters that hide in the grass and slink in the trees. While out hunting one night, human Doris trespasses into the vampire domain of Count Magnus Lee. As payment for her crime, Lee "kisses" her and discovers that her blood is the sweetest he's tasted in ages. Lee decides to marry Doris. Doris hires a Vampire Hunter known as "D" who is a dhampir (half human, half vampire) to kill Magnus Lee and that's as much as I can say without spoiling!

The synopsis of vhd:b however:
Charlotte, a young woman, is abducted by Baron Meier Link, a vampire nobleman who is known not to harm humans needlessly. Charlotte's father, John Elboune, hires D, a dhampir, to find her and rescue her, and alternatively, kill her humanely if she's been turned into a vampire. At the same time, Charlotte's older brother, Alan Elbourne, hires another group of vampire hunters, the notorious Marcus Brothers. The two parties (D and the Marcus brothers) race inexorably after Meier Link. However, Meier Link hires the mutant Barbarois; a group of lethal mercenary bodyguards. Will D be the one to save Charlotte or will something else happen? Once again all I can say without spoilers!

Anyways yeah this series is based of light novels that I am currently reading if you're also interested. Hope you are willing to check it out!

Also here's a tiktok I found of vhd:b rather than a photo because I feel like it captures the essence of the film: <https://www.tiktok.com/@em.cine/video/7092852495805877550?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7084448875348936193>

There's a lot but I'll give three:

Princess Jellyfish
Princess Jellyfish
Quick overview:
Girl shut-ins who have their own hyperfixations that don't fit into the mold that societal pressures what a woman should be.
A crossdressing man who wants to fight his wealthy family meets the girls and wants to help them in a battle.
A battle against local governments and real estate agents as they try to gentrify the local neighborhood the girls live in.

Pros:
Girl empowerment. You can be a girl no matter what you do and what you look like.
"Make up and outfits are your battle armour" is legitimately what got me into makeup lmao.
The opening is really fun. Really, watch the op.

Cons:
A lot of pitting women against other women.
Might use outdated terms.
I can see the issue of "changing yourself to fit in" can be a message.

Paranoia Agent

Paranoia agent

Overview:
tw: violence, p*dophilia, hints at SA

Without spoiling too much, here's a snippet from wikipedia:
"The plot relays between a large cast of people affected in some way by the phenomenon; usually Lil' Slugger's victims or the detectives assigned to apprehend him. As each character becomes the focus of the story, details are revealed about their secret lives and the truth about Lil' Slugger."

essentially it's a social phenomenon and everyone has very weird and messed up lives. There's a lot of psychological elements to it as it is a psych horror.

Pros:
holy shit holy shit holy shit this is pretty deep. If you like psych thrillers, really, give this a try.
The animation was really good for its time.
I've been thinking about some of the plots of each episode for almost 15 years now.

Cons:
It's a really heavy anime that touches on some unpleasant topics. I can understand why a lot of people would give this a pass.

Serial Experiments Lain

Serial Experiments Lain

Overview:
Tw: s*x and nudity, substances, violence, flashing lights

from the ringer:
"Serial Experiments Lain is about a young girl's reluctant march toward digital martyrdom. Today, Lain's story resonates more so as an allegory about the perils of forging one's identity—an alternative identity, however false, misguided, perverse, delusional—using the internet."

Pros:
It really talks about developing your own sense of self
It's a coming of age story but a little bit more deeper and darker
Makes you think a lot about the internet.

Cons:
Again, a lot of heavy stuff.

Honourable Mentions:
Chobits - nsfw, nudity, protag is a bit yikes. Fascinating look at early 2000s life. whimsical art style because CLAMP do be like that.
Cardcaptor Sakura - Another CLAMP classic, sfw, girl who becomes magical girl through cards.
Sailor Moon - cmon you know sailor moon. CMOOOON. Magical girl anime that's a little trippy. Reincarnation? Sorta?

A couple days ago I learned about Ruin Explorers: Fam and Ihrie and I've been having a good time with it! Girls who can do magic (but if one of them does she's cursed to turn into a mouse, so she has to teach the other one how to do magic well,) looking for treasure in old ruins, then stuff happens. It's also super short since it's a 4 ep ova, I'm halfway through now since I've been watching an ep a day. It has a solid mix of comedy and action and the English dub is great for the tone; I haven't found subs for it but I haven't looked very hard.

There's a bit of nudity in episode 1 (Ihrie takes a bath) but I think that's the only possibly objectionable thing I've seen so far?
