is friendproject actually safe because I've heard rumours there's a lot of security gaps because the owners abandoned their site and they were racist and stealing information (these are just rumours I don't actually know e.e )

I heard the original owner(s) abandon the site a long time ago, it's now operated by this company named ClearVista (I wouldn't trust FP with my data) so I would encourage you not to use it. It's clearly not safe.
P.S: FP is deserted just like (current) MySpace.
