Scream is such a classic. Not sure I could pick one favorite, but Halloween and Poltergeist are both top of the list.

mine would probably be Horns. while it wasn't scary for most of the movie, i thought the story was interesting to follow.

If you count the 1954 movie gojira a horror, then it's that. If not, then I'll probably have to say Return of the living dead.

The Changeling (1980) with George C. Scott is my favorite to recommend to folks. Well built suspense without a reliance on jump scares or gore. Slow, steady, unnerving. Underrated horror classic.

I have a lot of affection for the original blair witch project. Its incredible what was basically an art house improvised indie film became as big as it did. Also Heather gives an incredible performance and what an iconic ending.

But The Seventh Victim has to tied up there with me. Same screenwriter as Cat People, and just like Cat People there is a lot of lesbian subtext. Probably the most sympathetic devil worshippers ever put on film, and a large reason for that is they're clearly a metaphor for the gay community (the screenwriter himself was gay.) Incredible movie, though the pacing is real messy and there is almost this weird sort of membrane over the whole film that makes it feel muted emotionally, but the moment that rips through that is so breathtaking. Also... another iconic ending.

Ok, I have to do a "Top 5" because there are some too close to call...

5. IT and IT - Chapter 2 (since they are part of the same story)
4. The Void
3. A Dark Song
2. Dark Was the Night

And

1. The Ritual

I tend to like implied horror over straight gross out.
