The name "Tamagotchi" comes from the blend of two japanese words!
First the word Tamago which stands for "Egg" and the word Tomodachi which goes for "Friend"!!
Meaning that if the word Tamagotchi had an translation it would be something along the lines of "Cute little egg" or "Loveable egg"!
Others sources may say different word combos but in the end they all lead up to the Tamagotchi we all adore! I simply used these because they are the ones with more sources confirming them!
