The dreams
of dream itself
The Dream gazed upon the world from above. Their robe draped down the arctic,
Dreams of Elijah Nicholas
changing between a green and purple, their tears drop down and freeze in the
sky forming shapes and stories, and their hair grazes against their neck and
little specks of stardust drop down from it. The world was at ease, adrift in a
kingdom they each created that they could rule over. They watched down on
earth, and they lowered their pointer finger down to a man by the name of
Elijah Nicholas. Elijah was a man of middle-class status, he had a wife who
passed away last year, three kids, a cat named Skittles, and a dog named
Dasher. He has long forgotten his kids’ names as they left his life years ago,
it was something that still kept him up and he would talk to his wife about on
a regular basis. Dream peeled apart the skin on his forehead, creating an
opening that Elijah would never feel, and so Dream crawled into his head. When
they entered Dream became three. A young girl named Eileithyai had a hole in
her forehead that allowed you to see through her. Then there was a short old
man named Geras, he was naked and had only wisps of hair left on his head that
whispered of ache and forgetfulness. And finally, there was Hyman, a man who
appeared to be in his late twenties, he had a wing that was broken that sang
songs of hatred, and another wing that flourished and sang songs of love.
Eileithyai looked at Elijah, and from her pocket she pulled out some toys,
there was a toy teddy bear, and a little wind-up bird. Elijah stood there
smiling, he picked up the little bird and Eileithyai picked up the teddy bear.
They sat there and played pretend, the teddy and the bird were best friends,
they sat there playing pretend for hours (Or what seemed to be hours) and
suddenly the bird flew out of Elijah’s hand and flew off into the horizon of
the dream land. Hymen flew down to Elijah and crafted him a woman from the
environment around him. Her hair was made of vines, her skin was made of clay,
and her eyes were crafted from pearls that shone day and night. She was
perfect, and Elijah went to kiss the woman but as soon as he wrapped her in an
embrace she fell apart, for she was not held together properly, and so Hymen
sang three songs, a song of finding love, a song of losing love, and finally a
song in a language that Elijah couldn’t understand. Geras stumbled his way over
to Elijah, each step causing him pain, and each breath made his stomach
collapse inwards exposing the cavity underneath his ribs. He finally arrived at
Elijah and whispered in his ear, and upon hearing those words Elijah faded
away, and then he was gone. He woke up in sweat and fear and looked at his
mantle, only to notice the picture of his wife and kids was there somehow, and
he smiled, and it was the same smile he carried into the kingdom of sleep.
