So, I just watched Whiplash with my bf. He and my brother had been HEAVILY convincing me to see it for a while. And now I know why. The writing is INSANELY good. All the dialogue sounds like actual, real life conversations, and has a really nice flow. It also presents a lot of the plot through action, rather than the characters explaining the story to us.
On top of that, I love the way the writers portray narcissism through Fletcher. I haven’t seen narcissism so perfectly done in a film like… ever. And they don’t sugarcoat how manipulative they can be. It’s very raw, and feels so real.
The ending as well, really makes you think. At first, it kinda appears as though the bad guy wins. But when you stop to really think about it, Andrew broke the abusive cycle and didn’t let Fletcher scare him. Fletcher thought he won, but in reality, Andrew stuck up for himself.
I don’t do too well with open ended endings. (Which this movie has) but I’m kinda ok with it being that way. For my sanity, I’m headcanoning that after the show, Andrew leaves Fletcher to go his own way. But hey, that’s just a theory… A FILM THEORY!!! (Iykyk)
