Your family should support you and be fine with it, can't say exactly how it is for you but if they don't it's on them. There isn't really any solution to this, being punk isn't the norm obviously and a more strict family will probably have an issue but it all comes down to how you feel and what seems right to you.
Either way, when it comes to DIY for me, I started out with posters, just trace over albums that you like over paper with a pencil then go over that with a pen and stick them on your walls, doors, wherever you wanna, or start out by tracing simple band logos instead of album covers. It'll also help you later on if you'd want to make stencils and patches.
Another thing I think is rather neat is going to local shows and gigs, helps you bond with the community and often get introduced to new, growing bands that would really gain from your support. It's also a fantastic place to get CD's, shirts and all the cool stuff straight from the artists, benefiting them greatly.
