My digital video to VHS conversion setup

For the past few years I've been collecting VCRs and trying to figure out a good setup to record not only from VHS, but onto VHS as well!

My breakthrough discovery was when I found a more modern VCR that has a HDMI output. The VCR model is called RC389H, and it also has a DVD player.

This was a breakthrough for me because most converters weren't really that great and would never give me the quality I wanted. Some would loose the signal randomly, and some would stutter, and some would even crash my computer. But because of this VCR's HDMI output, I don't need to find a converter, as it already has one built in! And best of all, this setup doesn't have any of those previously mentioned issues!

So by using a HDMI to AV converter to get the video signal from the computer into the VCR, and an Elgato capture card to capture the HDMI output of the machine, I'm able to produce a pretty nice looking fully authentic VHS effect! In glorious 576i50 PAL resolution!

I'm very quite happy with this setup, and I used it on one of my most recent animated works "Frida Fladderöra", which you can watch below! At the end you can see a little bit of the VHS recording process.
