Panic buying the wrong things

Big snowstorm mixed with ice is heading our way where I am in Maryland, and of course that means a lot of people panic buying in case of power outages. I'm set with my supplies, but I went to the grocery store to get ingredients for a mini cake (my grandma's birthday is tomorrow and I'll have enough time to visit her and give gifts before the storm hits) and goddamn EVERY egg carton was gone! Yogurt was also pretty bare. Frozen pizzas were also mostly gone. And don't even get me STARTED on the meat section. But you know what I didn't see sold out? Tinned fish. Beans. Protein bars. Canned soup and vegetables. Tortillas. Naan. Packaged noodles. Dried fruit. Like what the hell.

I grew up in hurricane country so buying super perishable foods was the stupidest idea you could do and yet people down south did the SAME THING. "Yes let me get 2 gallons of milk and 5lbs of chicken breast and 3 loaves of bread. I'm sure all of this will be fine when the power goes out while we're in the month of August." I guess if the power does go out it'll be -5F outside so you kind of don't have to worry about cold things spoiling if your house gets freezing anyway?? But idk maybe it's the backpacker/scout in me that's like yall should be getting the compact super shelf stable foods. My only problem is that I don't have a gas stove anymore so if my power DOES go out I can't even boil water *sob* I miss you so much babygirl.....

Is anyone else on the east coast sitting on their stockpile of sardines and tortillas wondering wtf is wrong with some people
