Hi everyone!!!

I'm an acoustic guitarist (still a fairly new one) hoping to learn electric guitar and eventually join a band.

today I was talking to my friend (who makes her own music, is also emo, and is so super cool) about how she wishes she knew music theory and is now getting into it. she urged me to start NOW, that I was fairly new

i know the very basics (kinds of notes, names of symbols and names) from playing piano and being forced to do pages of level 1 theory. but i want to really really understand music and how to play it.

can anyone tell me where i could start, what books to buy, yada yada?

me asking u to help me so i can be a famous guitarist

Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory; Complete Edition is a pretty good lesson book/ work book for giving a general overview with music theory and understanding how the system works, especially if you'd prefer to have an analog option to learning instead of it all being online

keep in mind though, Music Theory isnt like... a law, or rules you HAVE  to abide by in order to make music, its a tool you can use to improve/understand how it works and expand on it in whatever way you want. So, theory shouldn't limit you, its supposed to help you
(If you want some inspo or examples, look at the Soundart and Experimental Genres!! or if you a gamer; check out Toby Fox and the written notation of his music!)

Happy Theory Learning!!
