Alternatives to discord?

Hello hello

Feel like I've been on thin ice and "one day away" from discord turning to complete rubbish. What kind of alternatives do all of you guys know about? I've heard of matrix/element but I'd like to know more. Just looking for a place to have chatrooms, have voice chats, stream games/movies...etc etc

I'd like to diversify, don't wanna put all my eggs in one basket.

There's Slack, which is basically discord for grown-ups. It's mostly used by businesses for employees to chat with each other, but it's available for free for anyone to use. You create a server called a "workspace" and then you can create channels, etc. There's voice chat, video, basically everything you'd expect.

For chat rooms, specifically, there's also IRC. It's been around for ages, but is still pretty active today.  No voice or video, though, just text. You can change the color of the text, though, so that's something.

Matrix is definitely an option, too, although I haven't used it personally.

Outside of Matrix, IRC definitely works, and XMPP is alive too. What blows my mind is how I can have clients for all of them running at the same time and they still take up less RAM+CPU than a single browser tab with Discord in it. So you can have many alternatives at the same time, not just one.

P.S. Oh, also various cloud apps like CryptPad or Omnispace / Agora-Project have built-in chat as well. Much like SpaceHey. ;)
