What do we see in them?

Creepypasta has always been a part of my life, and now that I'm older, I've wondered why. I'm curious to know if there's a particular factor that makes us like these characters so much. Is it their stories or something else? What do you think?

For me it was definitely their backstory. Creepypasta characters went through really harsh things like bullying, abuse, betrayal, abandonment as well as body horror and for as long as I can remember they were the closest source of comfort I had for similar hardships. Back then it seemed like we valued shock horror more, and were a little blind to inconsistencies (Judge Angels suddenly becoming a ruthless killer, Nurse Ann switching from a very kind and sweet nurse to a killer beast...). I heavily empathize with crp's, I don't really see them as dangerous
