Using the language

We all heard that if you want to become good at using a language, you need to talk to speakers of said language. 

But what about other ways of using a language? 

For example, I sometimes make comics with little scenarios in Japanese, which are closer to Turkish melodramas than anything else. Me and my friend have also started to exchange holiday cards in Japanese.
