Die My Love (Spoilers)

Die My Love

I watch Die My Love this year and I thought it was great. I don't think everyone will love or understand it. I also think that's the point. This is my review I put on letterbox.

5 stars

"This movie is disturbing. It's great. This movie isn't for someone who wants their movie and ending to be outlined for them. This movie leaves a lot to interpretation, but it is saying something. We're seeing grace as she sees herself and how others see her.  The ways the mental illness can be a reality and not be a reality at the same time. Its intentionally dizzying, painful, and real."

These are my thoughts, SPOILERS:

Some people will chalk it up to "grace is crazy and unmanageable"...

I think Grace is no more or differently ill than other mentally ill individuals. The difference is that she is alone, and the people who are around are individuals who do not understand mental illness. The people around her think they know what to do to make her better.

Her partner has her committed (twice, I believe), gives her a baby, gets her a dog (she says she wants a cat), marries her, and takes her to parties. Not in that order. These are not magical mental illness fix-all's. It's almost as though everyone is telling her, "Here's the box, it will heal you, and you will be like us." No one asks her "do you want to be like us? what makes you happy? What do you need? Why do you feel the need to act a certain way or say certain things?" They have already fed themselves the answers.

It isn't that no one cares. It's that NO ONE, not even Grace, knows what is wrong, but acts as they do. No one talks with her; they talk at her. She doesn't feel like the person she cheats with knows her; she knows he is not in the box, and that's some lifeline she can connect to. Grace lives in another place that is numb, not just depressed but unalive and unconnected.

I believe the fire at the end could be one of 2 things. Either it means she lost her life, or it could mean that she is finally alive, taking her life into her own hands, weather its good or bad its hers, and that has given her a new life. The fire being something ignited and burning brightly inside of her, and letting the old things die.

What do you guys think.
