William Golding's classic novel taught me that power corrupts even the most naive and innocent. It showed me the two sides of human nature, the need for social cooperation and the desire for control and power. It showed me how dangerous of an animal humans can be. It was one of the first books that changed my little middle-school self fundamentally. Since then, I have read many books that have shook me to the core, but none seemed as universal as Lord of the Flies. That's why the central symbol for decay and corruption in that novel seemed the most fitting to represent America, with rampant cruelty, police violence, and corrupt leadership at every level of the government. The dead pig is analogous to this dead state. Fuck fascism, ACAB!
