physical media revival opinions?

Forum: Reclaiming the Internet Group

Recently I've seen online that alot of people are talking about brining back physical media like cd's and things like that, also old phones, basically just 2000's tech instead of modern tech and people have been planning to start this in 2026

I think it'll last like a week then people will get tired of how out-dated tech is, like at the start of 2025 a lot of people were talking about "bringing back 2020" with things like the sparkly anime profile pictures, the bunny hats, monster energy crafts, the makeup, and overall colorful aesthetic. It didn't last long at all and look how 2025 turned out. AI everywhere, labubus, IPhone 17 came out, and everything else.

I feel like it'll be the exact same outcome with the bringing back physical media in 2026 thing.

I think alot of people don't realize they could choose to do that NOW, why wait?

I do think it'd be nice if we could keep this going but I HIGHLY doubt this will actually happen let alone for a long period of time

i agree that we can do that rn but physical media is always subjective to time and unfortunately a lot of it is lost to damage, and companies would never throw away their easy cashgrab of signature services and paid use permissions. i feel almost like a doomer but i do think that we are lost and the only option is to save the physical media we can and roll with it

Dahy- I agree I think its just about aesthetics aswell most people ive seen talking abt this trend is people wishing the alternative subcultures and a huge part of those subcultures are heavily base on the early 2000's

I support the release and idea to continue physical media in any capacity. No matter how niche or accepted it may end up being. The only downside that I can mention is how bad scalpers will take advantage of any situation for their own greed. Seems to always be the case now days. Implementing buying limits sadly would have to be issued just for this reason alone on any type of physical release. It's really sad that it has even had to come to this. Something as simple as just owning something physically without the invasive nature of modernism.

PschLua i (or, rather my parents)'ve got cds from 30 years ago that still play just fine, heck ive got cd-rs from 2006 that still work, but even if bit rot/inevitable decay is your worry, discs can always be easily backed up and stored on your computer. rn one of the only mediums that has been subject of rotting is the LaserDisc, which was basically this huge ass optical disc that i think stored the analog footage in 1s and 0s but then they invented dvd and they stopped making them.

i think one trick to convince people to buy physical media is you heavily censor stuff on tv and streaming but it's uncensored if you buy the physical version. it's an old trick, but there's nothing that couldn't make it work now, no?

Well... we can't expect the mainstream to change like that. There will always be dumb trends as long as there are people that will follow them. But if a someone truly wants to live a different way, they will. It's up to you if you want to use old tech. You can try it and see if it suits you. Don't wait for the world to change around you, it rarely changes in the way that you'd like it to be. Do your research and have fun!
