While scrolling through a variety of websites and apps, I have noticed a very specific pattern. Pushed through the algorithm as well as human "nature", is a never-ending gushing river of negativity. Through "joking" methods such as "ragebaiting", actual hate, or a black-and-white tunnel vision onto the negative aspects of life, this pattern repeats itself.
And the worst part? We're addicted to it.
Don't tell me you haven't felt it, even for a small moment, a sort of comfort of being understood by a stranger online. Briefly paying attention to a post, and seeing your emotions, thoughts and opinions being mirrored back at you. At first, it feels as if someone holds your hand, and says "I get it, I'm going through the same thing". But then it multiplies. Post after post after reel after short after tiktok after capcut template (!!), you get sucked into this world were the only thing that exists is absolute depression and hopelessness. For moments, it feels safe there. And you cling onto that feeling like your life depends on it, fully ignoring everything else its making you feel.
The truth is, no, none of it is helping you. That relatable vent account, that one blogger who's "putting your emotions into words"? They are dragging you down with them. Let's be honest here, you don't close the phone feeling warmth and connection. At least not anymore. You're an empty shell, or feeling even worse than when you first opened it. Not just because of the legitimate neurological downsides of being on a screen, but because of the content you consume as well (either by choice, or by an algorithm based to work against you)
Children and especially teenagers are in the most danger here, as we are desperately looking for understanding and a sense of belonging. But if our solution for it is falling in the pit everyone is trying to climb out of, we are going to waste away.
My point? Stop accepting the comfort in your collective sadness. It's time to take matters into your own hands. Take desperate measures, delete all social media if you have to. Or just steer away from that type of content. I know its easier said than done, but don't you think its about time you gain back the control this digital age stole from you? Don't you think its about time you stopped living in this box society is trying to drag you into?
You do not need to be online 24/7 to be relatable and likeable. Your friends will survive without sending you 90247 tiktoks a day, most of which I am sure are either trashy or accompanied by the #vent tag.
You must break the pattern today, or the loop will repeat tomorrow.
There is still hope.
