oh yeah i'd also prefer the games to be cheap and on steam

If you're talking about THE Valve, a company that started Steam, kinda a mixed bag since they didn't make that many games but you could try these instead of the usual "Counter Strike" or "Half Life"
- Day of Defeat / Source (There's two versions)
- Deathmatch Classic (Basically Quake)
- Riccochet
- Team Fortress Classic
Now for Indie games, erm I don't know really but I'll recommend some that I've played
I don't know your budget but I think these games would fit in the cheap section
- Force Reboot (A cheaper alternative to post void and ultrakill)
- Towerheart (Sukoban game)
- Post Void (Roguelite)
- Colt Canyon (Roguelike)
- Ember (RPG)
- The Sacred Tears TRUE (RPG)
- Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom (RPG)
-Telltale Texas Hold'em (A really old "engine demo" from Telltale)

Suits: Absolute Power, rll good turn based rpg. There is a prequel but it is not needed to understand the game

Really niche indie game: Shady part of me.
It's a beautiful puzzle game. Idon't know, something about the ambiance and the character of this game feels so good to me. I recommand it strongly, easily top 5 of my fav games
