How much do we worry about phonetics? Because we are only going to write and not pronounce, we could create unpronounceable words.

Apart from that, vowels. Do we use a simple system of the 5 classic ones, one from the Romance languages with 7, or maybe 10? Maybe something more complex, like systems of long and short vowels, like in Latin, or nasal vowels. Do we count the English R as a vowel? (It meets all the characteristics.) The same with Y. Maybe we could go for something simpler, like a system of 3, or even just one (that would be funny to pronounce). We also need to think about the use of diphthongs, hiatuses, and triphthongs, and those things, although that already falls under phonotactics.

update:
Remember that we have to make them in such a way that they can at least be written, ergo romanized. Can you use diacritical marks? Like á ä â à (with my keyboard, I can only use those 4 marks).

Update2:

Probably we can just use 6 vowels 'cuz only a, e, i, o, u, and y can have a diacritical mark.

Since I speak Spanish, I am in favor of diphthongs and triphthongs, and somewhat against hiatuses. I also find myself tempted by the 5-vowel system, but that would be the easy way, hence boring. Therefore, I might opt for a system of 8 cardinal vowels, counting the English R as the 9th, so that the language would be a bit cursed.

Update 1:

we can write this like:

a, e, i, o, u, y, h, r, w

Update2:

Probably this is iunfeasible

i propose we have like 3 vowels but then 5 or something tonemes

so maybe like:

a:[a˧, a˥, a˩, a˧˥ a˧˩]

e:[e˧, e˥, e˩, e˧˥ e˧˩]

o:[o˧, o˥, o˩, o˧˥ o˩]

but idk if thats too unpronounceable, ive only ever made one tonal conlang so im not really sure

I think it would be too complicated, maybe we could have more vowels and 2 tones.

Nine vowels seemed appropriate to me to make the conjugations simple, or perhaps make the directions associate with a particular vowel, with 'r' associated with the center.

The tones are complicated, of course, with 2 tones, I think I could at least try to pronounce it. 9 vowels I think are simpler. Also, we have to consider that we have to romanize everything. I forgot to mention that aspect. I’m going to update the post.

New idea after Update 2:

6 vowels, a, e, i, o, u, and English r, but written like y

2 tones, and short and long variants: á is short low, à is short high, ä is long low and â is long high.

In Ipa: a, e, i, o, u, ɹ

ok i get it, thats a bit too many tones

I accept your idea, but can we just switch the short low and short high marks cuz the acute is usually used for high tones?
