Book discussion…

Hey all! Thought I’d make this a forum post rather than a group bulletin as it’s a topic that I’m sure many people have a lot of thoughts on

What’s everyone’s favourite books? Genres? Authors? Your top recommendations when somebody asks?

I’m about to have a loooot of free time, and until my reading lists for university release, not a lot to read. So I thought why not ask what everyone’s favourites are here?

I’ll go first at least, to give a starting point for discussion I guess…my favourite author is Shirley Jackson, with my favourite book of hers being We Have Always Lived in the Castle (though Hill House is a very close second), and my favourite short story from her being split right down the middle between Louisa, Please Come Home and The Renegade. Other than that, my other fav fiction title would probably be And the Ass Saw the Angel by Nick Cave. I’m a decent nonfiction reader too - favourite would probably be Youngman by Lou Sullivan, but I’m kind of nonfictioned out at the moment

Love horror and gothic novels, or anything really weird and off-putting (if you couldn’t tell by my list of favourites), but I’m open to anything! Just share the things you love here, or the book you’re reading at the moment, or even the book you plan to read next! And don’t forget to ask any other commenters about their reads :)

Great question and great answers! These are mine:

1. Favourite Author

I don’t think I’ve read enough work from one author to deem them my absolute favourite… but if I have to answer I’d probably would go with Virginia Woolf or Euripides. I’ve probably read their work the most and everything I read I enjoyed.

2. Favourite Books

This year alone, I’ve read some great books. I love Dorian Gray, Meditations, Wuthering Heights, Emma, Medea, and Little Women.

3. Favourite Genre

Classics, gothic horror, and mythology.

Shirley Jackson is great! I've only read one collection in full, but she really is excellent.

1. Favourite Author

Thomas Ligotti. I burned through four of his collections in quick succession years ago, and it's some of the most successfully unsettling writing around in contemporary horror... and absolutely miserable! He's got an incredibly distinct writing style which is initially very off-putting, but adds to the character of the stories. I'd read everything he put out if I could. My favorite collection of his is Songs of a Dead Dreamer, but the other three I've read are not far off at all, with Teatro Grottesco being almost a coin toss away. Some favorite stories are "Masquerade of a Dead Sword: A Tragedie," "Purity," "The Red Tower," "Our Temporary Supervisor," "Gas Station Carnivals"... and many more!

After Ligotti, Lovecraft, Shirley Jackson.

2. Favourite Books/currently reading

Favorites beyond Ligotti... The Transition of H. P. Lovecraft: The Road to Madness, Shirley Jackson's Dark Tales, Robert W. Chambers' The King In Yellow, William Beckford's Vathek, Charles Montgomery Skinner's Myths and Legends of Our Own Land Vol. 2. William Hope Hodgson's The Night Land and The House on the Borderland, too, although The Night Land drags in the middle.

Currently reading Henry George's Progress and Poverty, and George Jackson's Blood in My Eye, plus Shirley Jackson's Come Along With Me (which has some stories that aren't in Dark Tales), albeit very slowly.

3. Favourite Genre

Weird fiction.
