Fly tying is a very niche and intricate art form that can be very hard to approach for the first time. Thankfully it's not impossible and there are plenty of resources to get started and hopefully today I can help open the gate so you can embark on your own Fly tying journey.
Because of it's niche nature Fly tying materials and tools can be hard to find and even expensive. Fear not I have some options for those starting on a budget.
Most people may consider purchasing a kit to get started. This is a fantastic option but there are some things you need to look out for before buying the first kit you see. Fly tying kits can come in a variety of prices and configurations. Kits on the lower end of the price range often leave out the most important piece of equipment which is the vice. Vices can be very pricey in of themselves.
I highly recommend the Waspi Fly tying starter kit as it has everything you need to get started. I personally started with this kit and still use the tools included in the kit to this day. I got mine from my local fly tackle shop and it was $99 which is one of the more affordable starter kits on on the market and does come with a vice which is huge. They also include a DVD and book with instructions as well as all the materials you need. They are not stingy with the materials either you can make hundreds of flies before eating through all the materials.
For more free education on Fly tying check out your local library system for books on the subject. I also recommend using Youtube to learn as there are thousands of videos about fly tying. Check out your local fly fishing club if you have one as many times they will host classes for fly tying which can be super helpful.
Hope this helps!
Happy fishing!
