Either the bass or the eclectic guitar, the electric guitar mainly because my MC oc plays the guitar in her band. Or maybe a piano even...

Idk though because they cost a lot of money time. And yes, I want to play an instrument because I have a fictional oc band.

I play Bass and Electric but mostly Electric, here’s some more simple songs to play on Electric:

Undone-The Sweater Song (Weezer)

Come As You Are (Nirvana)

Nothing else matters (Metallica)

Sober to Death (Car Seat Headrest; this one sounds better on Acoustic imo but it could absolutely be played on an electric)

As for Bass… just don’t start with a Primus song…..

I do bass, guitar, and drums. I think either guitar or bass is a good place to start.

There's a resale website called Reverb where you can get gear cheaper than usual, kinda like a musical eBay.

I suggest the guitar over bass primarily for two reasons; I think it's best to learn your MC's instrument and you can make basslines with the guitar anyways, use an octave pedal then boom you've got a bass with less power plus if you learn a decent amount of music theory on the guitar or just have good natural note recognition then honestly you can apply whatever you play on the guitar before transcribing it onto piano or any instrument just as long as you have the idea lying around whether it's in your head or in some recording hidden deep in a voice memo app.

Not saying the same can't be applied for bass and it is possible but two less strings (resulting in less notes and less dynamic in chords) and the strings being thicker can be a bothering trait for beginners.

However if you prefer the bass that much ( to which I did which is why it was my first instrument fully in my ownership at least) then go with it.
