to me they are mostly entertainment, but they can definetively be used to tell great stories and express many different things. many have left a great impact on me, and i will most likely never forget them.
allthough, i do not agree with the sentiment that "all games should be preserved" because i feel like some games should never exist in the first place.

Spicy opinion sent to someone like me who supports game preservation so I wrote a statement below. If anyone wants to talk more on such, I recommend sending a link to another forum to migrate the discussion if I don't edit this post with one later.
I doubt the reasons to not preserve games are necessarily exclusive to games. There are unique things to game like having the player engage in horrific acts themselves, but they still stem from problems that can be in other forms of media. Plus, there are probably bigger factors like info hazards and history that could be considered.
Now will you see me working to preserve dubious games? Very unlikely to even be involve with anything related to such in the first place so I'll reserve more reasoning for when I have to make a decision that involves a situation in regards to preserving dubious games. For now, I'll keep my opinion to pro preservation until that stance won't suffice.

I mostly see them as entertainment, I play them for that reason and usually don't care about the story. From time to time though there's some games that have amazing stories that I really dig, but when I'm playing a game I'm focusing on the game itself. If a story is good, then it adds onto the experience, if not, then it won't affect my opinion. They're just meant to be there for entertainment at the end of the day.
Also quick little comment on one of the other replies regarding game preservation, I think what they said is somewhat true. The only ones I'm completely fine with being thrown away are those 🍇fantasy games (or anything that's similar in nature), genuinely I can't think of a reason why we should preserve those games. Preserve everything else though.

Games to me are everything. Games are a conversation, either between yourself and the developer, you and your team, or you and your opponent. Games are an escape into fantasy worlds beyond our imagination. Games are a challenge to improve yourself as much as possible. Games are art, with everybody having different interpretations and experiences. Games are memories of times gone by. Games are life!

With the existence of the American Woodcock, I wouldn't say games are everything. I like to talk about games a lot, but if they were everything, I would be missing out on the rest of life. I might even be missing out on too much as is to be honest even just for the safety of being grounded in reality.

They make up a part of my life, but they are definitely not the main thing I am interested in.
(Atleast compared to cartoons, and Youtubers hehe)
