OC story set in the 1960s

So the creature in my profile pic is named Bell (it/its). I'm really interested in the telephone network of the 1960s, and not only the monopoly the Bell System had on telecommunications, but how the company had to scheme in secret to find ways to catch people who were exploiting the system to make free calls (these people were known as phone phreaks). They tapped an obscene amount of phone calls in order to do this, and even recorded hours and hours of said calls. The project was called Greenstar.

So, with that historical background out of the way... My story takes place in an alternate universe where this project hasn't begun yet. Enter David. He's an engineer fresh out of college (wealthy, fraternity-type), who just got his dream job at Bell Labs and wants to make himself invaluable by coming up with a solution to this phone phreak problem and ropes his old college roommate into his scheme. His plan? Create a sentient creature in secret who can work tirelessly, listening to phone calls for any sign of tampering. Since he's unsure whether or not his plan will succeed, nor is he certain of the legality of ANY of the plan, he keeps all details under lock and key.

David's old roommate, a biologist, is somehow able to create life, which takes the form of...Bell. Yes, named after the company. Bell is essentially a homunculus that has grown up into a person (thing) with an undying loyalty to the Bell System as a corporation, and more than that, an intrinsic love for the phone system. It works every day, listening to calls, infiltrating party lines, and reporting back to David, who is, in its eyes, an overbearing manager, desperate for the success of this clandestine project.

This is sooo interesting!! Very technical topic (in a good way)

Did te birth of Bell had other consequences :0? Like on their creator, or thanks to the word he did for the company that kinda stuff? (i don't think i'm very clear, mb..)

(Sorry, I don't know how to reply to forum replies/mention people!)

Thank you so much!! The roommate (I still haven't named him yet) was pretty disgusted with what he created and decided he wanted nothing more to do with this sick project David had devised. He has absolutely no idea what Dave and Bell are doing, and that's the way he likes it.

The company still doesn't know what David is doing, but I still haven't decided how I want things to end. One idea I have is that the company ends up using the data he collected to punish all of the people he caught, but in order to avoid any issues of PR, they throw David and Bell under the bus as rogue bad actors within the company.

ooh i like that idea!

How do you think Bell would react since you said it was very very loyal to the corporation :00? Could David use Bell abilties to backfire at the company for making them (David and Bell) look bad ?

I think Bell would be devastated to learn it was thought of as an enemy of the company. It doesn't really want anything to do with David after that point, so even if he did have a plan, it would not be on board for it...

Woah, this is a cool premise you came up with! I really like how you focused your story on the history of telecommunications. I wonder if any of David's other friends or family ever gets suspicious or concerned about him since he's been focused on this secret project? Since his old roommate doesn't want to do anything with him after making Bell. I'm guessing Bell's undying loyalty to Bell Systems came from David's indoctrination, raving about how awesome the company is and trusting him blindly until it saw how overbearing he is.

Thank you so much for the reply Sphebble! Dave is unfortunately very skilled at seeming normal, and indeed this project is less out of love for the company and more out of a desire to climb the ranks and get recognition for doing good work. Honestly...he is pretty normal. If a bad person.

Meanwhile, all Bell knows is the phone network, so that's its entire world. It knows all the ins and outs, all the sounds that tell you what's happening; this is basically Bell's natural habitat. Back in the 20th century, the Bell System was often referred to as "Ma Bell" for its maternal presence (especially as a national monopoly), and that's even stronger for Bell since it was essentially raised by the Bell System.
