Hey, first time posting here ^^

I love the gothic subculture, the values, the aesthethic, the fashion and the way of seeing life. I feel very identified by it and want to be part of it.

The problem is that I don't really like goth music and I know it's a music driven subculture. I like punk, rock, glam rock, metal... But I only got to enjoy 1 or 2 gothic songs ^^"

Can I still be considered gothic?

i would not say that makes you gothic cuz it is entirely based on the music itself, i don't super duper like / listen to punk but i am in a punk band and love playing it so idk ;v;

i personally would not dress gothic if i did not listen to the music? idk maybe thats just me :P

no, but if you like 1 or 2 goth songs that's a good way to start trying to get into the music.

From what I know, you can't be a goth, since:

  • it's a subculture not only based in it's music (gothic rock, post-punk, dark wave etc)
  • It's also based on literature (Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker and Edgar Allan Poe being some of the most popular)
  • And the politics in the subculture, since it's basically a life style. You can't be part of the right wing and be considered a goth, since the subculture is a form of resistance against authoritarianism, prejudice, sexism and racism, aligning with left-wing ideologies such as progressivism and anti-capitalism

So, basically, you can dress gothic, since you have free will, but you won't be considered part of the goth subculture. But if you really want to be a part of it, you could always study more, considering you already like some gothic songs
