Forum: Games

I remember every game i used to play when i only could really play at my grandpa's pc! and from what i've seen, almost every gamer has got at least one game from the past that is engrained in the fabric of their mind.

Maybe it was a low quality movie tie-in, maybe it was on a cd attached to a tech magazine or maybe it was just in the back of the forgotten video game shelf in the nearest supermarket?

Please use this Forum entry to share your memories, give everyone a peek into your history, and the forgotten gems or shovelware that made you the gamer you are today!

You are encouraged to share the hsitory of how you found out or acquired the game, and your feelings that memory (or memories!) invokes in you.

For me the biggest one is Divinity II Ego Draconis. It's a third person RPG from Larian Studios (Yes, the same ones that made the 2023 GOTY Baldur's Gate III, and the critically acclaimed Divinity II: Original Sin!!) which tells the story of a dragon slayer sent to kill the last dragon, but with a twist! I won't spoil it in case anyone feels encouraged to check it out! It's sometimes on sale for less than 2$ so it's a cheap investment.

I recently revisited it, and let me tell you, the magic is absolutely there! It's a story of epic scale, the enviroments are DRIPPING with atmosphere and it's the perfect remedy for that xbox 360 era rpg's nostalgia. Also for 8 yo me, being able to turn into a dragon was the coolest thing ever, and even that isn't scratching the surface of how cool and magical the game is.

The only big drawbacks i can think of is the janky movement (but there are fanmade patches for it on the game's reddit forum) and the absolutely abhorrent ending which still makes me want to have a word with sven vincke... but we have to forgive him, his studio did make one of the greatest fantasy rpgs of all time...

And the way i found it, was a polish series "classics collection" made by CENEGA. It was a series of classic pc games from all genres, and my grandpa bought it. My first memory regarding that game was my grandpa telling me and my siblings that he can't get through a sequence which involved shooting down turrets as a dragon (Although i have to say, it was really easy when i recently replayed it!). I still have the og box, but the cd is missing (so i bought it on GOG) and the box itself is broken :((

honestly, i feel as if a lot of games have been forever sewn into my mind...

i guess the first one i'd start with is pac man world 2. my siblings had a lot of consoles growing up that i ended up inheriting (snes, ps2, wii), but i feel as if my earliest memories of playing video games comes from this one. i loved the snowy levels especially, because i thought the ice skating was so cool (never ice skated before since i don't live in an area with snow). i was probably the main reason the save file ended up dup losing like... a hundred lives..........

next up would be just. the wii, in general. but especially wii sports resort's swordfighting. that was my favorite mode as a kid, even though i was never particularly good at staying patient to make good hits.

and of course splatoon!!!!! it was one of the first games i got for myself on the first console i had for myself. i fell in love with it at first sight from videos on youtube. the idea of being a squid (and later octopus) kid, in paintball battles, and a completely new world... that was what drew me in particularly, new worlds. worldbuilding is one of the most important things of a game or media in general to me. i feel as if it's had the greatest effect on my mind out of all video games i've played; a lot of aspects of myself can be traced back to it. music, fashion, my own views on worldbuilding, my love of strategy-ish games...

i did notice there's a sort of pc focus in here, so i'd also like to add ferry halim's orisinal games and draw-a-stickman. my mom discovered them when i was super young and showed them to me. they're very peaceful corners of the internet for me now. small games to pass a little time. i feel as if draw-a-stickman especially had a pretty big influence on me in terms of aesthetics, i've always been nostalgic for that sort of doodle style in the late-2000s/early-2010s. no idea what it's called, but it's deeply important.

Don’t be sorry at all! That’s so cool tho, i think a huge part of nostalgia for the wii is the timeless aesthetic that invokes a feeling of calmness and peacefulness!

Jazz Jackrabbit 2, definitely. the og Doom. there was one more on my friend's laptop, it was a medieval sim where you could build a village. all I remember, is installing wolves in cages to places and setting them free while my friend wasn't in the room...and my friend always freaked out. lol
