The Malicious Taunt Of Moonlight.

The full moon hung high in the cloudless sky, casting its moonlit gaze over the forest. The haunting hoots of hollow-eyed barn owls echoed through the trees, mingling with Anthony’s ragged breaths and hurried steps. Low-hanging branches clawed at his skin. Then, suddenly-silence. The owls stopped. Anthony collapsed onto the damp earth. Anthony’s gaze bulged as he withered on the damp earth, tangled brambles catching on his silken shirt, tearing jagged rips into the expensive fabric. His tailcoat lay in a rumbled pile a few steps away. He had hastily ripped it off when he first began to feel the oppressive heat underneath his skin, invading his bones and muscles with a frenzied swiftness. The sensation rivaling Anthony’s swiftness to remove his shirt, the buttons popping free as his gnarled fingertips failed to undo them in time. The bones of his knuckles contorting painfully as well as the rest of his skeleton, causing his form to heave, his back arching from the ground as if he is trying to separate himself from his own misfortune.

Anthony had not expected such a cruel transformation to come to him on such an important night as earlier in the day, he had been told by his devout servant that tonight would not be a full moon, instead a crescent moon- a sight that brought Anthony such relief. Though, instead of that relieving sight, he had been met with the full moon, malicious with its unrelenting taunting which had forced him to flee from his manor like an unwilling bride, leaving his dear fiance Cordelia to be alone in her confusion. This fact along with the terrible pain coursing through Anthony’s veins, brought a tsunami of tears to his eyes and caused pathetic, pained sobs to escape his lips. His body twisting like a puppet jerked by unseen strings, coarse hair beginning to grow from every follicle of his body, pushing through his skin painfully, his teeth elongated, growing into vicious fangs. The bones of his fingers cracked, knuckles twisting out of shape, forcing his hands into grotesque claws. Man turning into a snarling beast despite his previous prayers, even the act of God could not reverse this unforgiving affliction- a curse from the devil himself, Anthony thought. The well-paid, discreet physicians who desperately tried to cure him had the same thought, causing them to flee into the night, unable to face the horror that lay within the young man. Most fled after witnessing a single transformation, their greed dissolving into pure horror as soon as they saw the beast.

With its transformation now complete, the bestial form rose from the bed of brambles, free from the thoughts of simple man. Its snout sniffs into the still air, searching for the scent it so hungrily desired- warm blood running through veins. So many nights, it had been denied its bloodlust, chained and locked in a cold cell. Its luminous eyes surveyed the eerie forest, silent as now the owls had flown away, frightened by the pained sobs released by man. As the beast's eyes met the gaze of his master’s own silvery glow, a thunderous howl escaped its jaws, a cry announcing his freedom.
