Despite how the title sounds my favorite bands are Nirvana and Soundgarden but I never really understood what grunge was about. Some songs were a chaotic mess in the best possible way (the best example for that would be Radio friendly unit shifter) but they can also be so melancholic at time (a good example would be Marigold). Despite it being my favorite genera of music I don't really understand it, does anyone know?

I'm not entirely sure myself but I think it was supposed to be the opposite of all the glam and hair metal that was so popular in the 80s. Rough and muddy guitars, raspy vocals, not dressing up for stage etc.
