I was scrolling on tiktok and I saw people arguing about whether or not listening to Sex Pistols is a punk essential, the argument was that while they were a bunch of scumbags and mostly just playing dress-up for profit their band did influence the punk movement and helped to introduce it in Europe so it's important to be familiar with their songs. What do ya'all think? I think it's not exactly necessary and that it might be easier to introduce someone through other bands that aren't complete sellouts

The only thing that I think about them is that they're not punk but rather hardcore rock.

I fucking love sex pistols, I believe they basically created punk in europe, but I don't think that you necessarly need to listen to sex pistols to be a punk. At frist they didn't define themeselves punk either, but they're a huge part of the punk movement and punk culture. People can love them and can hate them or feel indifferent but to like or not a band doesn't make you a punk, what makes you a punk is your lifestyle and your beliefs and I personally think that music is a small part of being punk. Sex Pistols is a punk band, but it's not the only punk band in the world.
I think they're amazing tho go listen to them

The manager (malcolm) of the sex pistols just wanted a boy band so he could make profit off them, I know Sid and Johnny both hated Malcolm for the manipulation and constant traveling, and finally made a focus on how their music was. Futhermore, Malcolm used thousands of dollars for making the great rock n roll swindle movie without the consent of the band and Rotten called him an "evil mastermind" because of the bands name was taken from a clothing store used for marketing. For example, Johnny Rotten believed that the band was very creative and Malcolm took all the credit. Sid Vicious hating the absolute fuck out of Malcolm was for him expiloting Sid's image into making him look dangerous. I'm not talking shit, I don't mean to, I love the pistols with all my heart and wished the Sid wasn't in the fucking ground because of his girlfriend getting stabbed by Sugarplum fairy.
TLDR
Malcolm Mclaren used the sex pistols image for his own benefit and Johnny and Sid hated him for it, doesn't mean I love them (this was prob way too much info)
