Listened 8/8

This was another album recommended to me. I'm familiar with modest mouse but really only their sleepwalking cover and bigger hits. My friend Eloise loves them and I've been searching for a copy of Interstate 8 for her, she's shown me bits of them that I've liked a lot but I always just remembered them for having that stomp-clap-feel-good adjacent type of music with Float On and Lampshades on Fire so I was anticipating more of that on this album. It was totally different from what I was expecting. They played some backward strings (I think) that made some songs have an almost Middle Eastern feel to it like on I Came as a Rat, Lives, and Dark Center of the Universe. I also adore the harmonics on The Cold Part, I learned how to play harmonics from Eloise so it feels like a full circle moment knowing how much she likes modest mouse. It didn't feel like two songs on this album had the same feel, some songs were much shorter and dancier and then other songs were longer and more of a beginning, middle, and end type of flow. I liked also how the singer changes his voice based on the song, like Wild Packs of Family Dogs has much more of a twangier voice to match the feel of the song but Perfect Disguise has a much smoother vocal delivery. Whenever he does the twangier delivery it reminds me End of the World as We Know It or They Might Be Giants. I feel like I'd lump half of these songs in my playlists that are shorter/upbeat and other ones in longer and more dreamy playlist. It felt cohesive but the songs felt very different from one another and I really enjoy that. I will be listening again ⋆.ೃ࿔*:・ Also thank god I don't judge an album by its album cover because get that sophomore year photoshop out of my face.
