Best way to annotate?

I have annotated for school but it only made me dislike having to read. Now I'm trying to read more often and I also want to think more critically about what I'm reading.

What's the best way to annotate? The most I do is writing a summary of a chapter on sticky note. Do you guys use highlighter, pens, or sticky notes? Thanks in advance!

I use highlighter tape strips. Usually, they come on a flat pad-like thing that you can keep in the book you are reading. Then I just assign different "thoughts" to each color. e.g., pink="surprise", purple="didn't know this", blue="called it". Usually, they come in a lot of different colors, so you can decide as you go along in your book, and then create an index that lists what you assigned to each on a paper inside your book. I like to stick a strip of the color next to each description rather than writing it down. This makes it so you can easily peel it off if you decide to
