BF's friends gf broke up with him

This is my first time posting on spacehey so I don't know all the rules yet so sorry if I misstep.

So my Boyfriends best friend and our former roommate just got dumped by his gf who was also in our friend group. Apparently she just called him out of the blue and broke it off (they've been together for 3 yrs). 

We all just graduated from college and they both graduated as architects (this is important). After graduation they both moved back to their parents homes in different cities, so it became long distance. He was living with his parents on their homestead which is super remote and not near any sort of city and she was living with her parents in a LARGE city. He is vehemently against large cities so he doesn't want to move to a large city even though the job market for them would require them be in a fairly large or medium city. They were thinking about moving to Memphis, Nashville, St. Louis, or Austin (They are both conservative so they want to stay in the south (they are not my fav people because of this)). 

He is also really cheap and kind of obstinate when it comes to his belief systems and she is more of a centrist and just more willful generally. To be honest I never really saw them working out as a long term couple because they are so different (she is also way too pretty for him). I feel bad for him but at the same time I would not want to be in her position. He never took her to nice restaurants, he didn't want to make the practical decision of living in a larger city, he is also just really old fashioned. Like I don't blame her but... IDK I just thought she could've handled it better. Especially because he had just asked her parents for their blessing so he could propose.
