I started listening to black metal a few years ago, and since I got into it through Mayhem I cant stand any hate that's directed towards them, but I hear and read (especially in the local metal scene and from so called "true metalheads") a lot of poser allegations for listening to them and other more "popular bands" in the genre (I didn't et them yet since I'm a big fan of more underground bands). Personally I think the word poser lost its meaning over the past few years, and I also stand behind the fact that listening to more popular bands doesn't make you a poser as long as you don't do it performatively and support your local scene and smaller artists

mayhem was also my catalyst into black metal when i was like 14 and even though my tastes have expanded widely i still listen to them today, simply because they made good music... there's a reason they had so much influence on the scene and are still popular to this day. what a lot of the people who scream "poser!" don't realize is that it really Just Depends lol. listening to the popular artists of a subculture doesn't make you an inherent poser, especially if you're new to the music/subculture and/or actively engaging in and exploring the other artists of a given scene.

You'd be hard pressed to find a more basic, introductory gateway band to Black Metal than Mayhem. And since nothing makes you more of a poser in the eyes of those, who for whatever odd reason care about such labels, than listening to basic gateway sort of bands you should not be surprised that such a term gets thrown around at folks who are just starting to get into the music, especially so if they are young.

I think about this topic a lot. I listen to metal and alternative stuff my whole life and black metal since like a few years or so. And yes I had my cringe mayhem/Pelle phase. So I´m predestined for this.
I think its like any other Band. If you listen to the band because you like the musc is everything fine. You also find the story cool? Nice, no Poser allert.
BUT if you only listen to the same three songs because they´re known or you ONLY like mayhem because of the story or the (prior)members you are infact a Poser. Because thats literally what that word means.
A poser is Someone who, through their way of presenting themselves, seeks to convey a certain image of themselves (one that does not correspond to their own personality) in order to impress others
That word is so overused, at this literally everyone is considert a poser. You are not a poser because you like a popular Band. Thats a tiktok/new gen thing. In real life there are so many people liking popular bands. I mean they´re popular FOR A REASON
